shareI was 14 when it came out so I saw it in the movie theater and was completely mesmerized! Still one of my favorite movies.

I was a freshman in high school when it came out, so I was aware of it. I finally saw it a couple of years later (when I could drive) at a second run theater in an Animal House - Blues Brothers double feature. I think it cost a buck to get in.

Similar experience to you, but my best friend had a late birthday (and was one of the eldest in our grade), so she got her drivers licence before I was old enough. That weekend we went to the movieplex and saw it. We weren't seventeen, but nobody ever asked you how old you were, back then, when you went to see an R rated movie.
shareI was a teenager in the summer of '78, and it was a must-see sensation.
shareI saw it in the theater when it first came out, with my dad and little brother. I was 17, brother was 13. Sometimes I think back on some of those movies we saw with Dad and wonder if he was cringing inwardly at some of the adult-themed issues and language that came up on the screen. He was a trooper, though... we also saw "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" together... more than once!
shareSaw it at the drive in theater on a Saturday night in 1978 outside Detroit.....then we rumbled afterwards.
shareRemember seeing it a ton on regular TV, thinking, "Oh boy, this is great!"
like Flounder, then rented the movie on VHS and realized how awesome the R rated version is.
HBO in 1979.
And I watched it over and over and over again.
And then my parents got tired of me continually watching the same films over and over again so they let me take the HBO converter box into my bedroom.

It was 1995 and I discovered this movie when it aired on a Sunday afternoon on a local channel. I didn't watch the whole movie, but I caught some parts. I was 8 years old at the time.

shareI saw it in the theater when it came out. I was nine. My parents wanted to see it. They took me to whatever movie they wanted to see. I wouldn't take my nine year old son to see Animal House, but they were hippie liberal parents. They didn't see the big deal in T/A, dirty words, or irreverent humor. Anyway, they had a subscription to NatLamp, and by the time I was nine in 1978, I was reading it cover-to-cover!
