Has anyone read the theory that they drowned at the beginning when they were swimming and the whole movie was a dream as they flew to the afterlife in the car at the end?

As the theory goes, Danny didn't save Sandy from drowning. She actually drowned and the whole movie was a dream. That's why they go flying off at the end.

Another theory is that Danny was the one who drowned while trying to save her and the whole movie was him imagining what his life would have been like with her had he survived.

I love the theory. The entire movie is their last minute fantasy as the light dies from their drowning. Claiming that their "he said/she said" song is proof against it is meaningless. Their fantasy dream is not a collection of facts. Both sides reflect their desires. Shreds of the truth come in here and there. The drowning doesn't make it into her account because it is fearful and she is having her romantic dream. He makes account of it only because his heroism in the matter is greater than his fear was.

It is a tidy theory. I like the ones for Matrix, Sponge Bob, and Fight Club+FBDO too.

That would make it a much, much better movie!

I wonder if the person that thought of this had just finished watching "Jacob's Ladder.'
