The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, had great cinematography. A really beautifully shot film. Solid movie overall as well.

In addition, I'd also add Ballast (2008) to this list.

Tarkovsky.

Can't believe none of David Gordon Green's films have been mentioned. So, I'll recommend two of the closest films to DOA in recent memory:

George Washington (2000)
All the Real Girls (2003)

Exactly. You can add Snow Angels (2007) too. I haven't seen his other "serious" movies, but they probably have beautiful cinematography too, because Malick is a big influence on him.

I don't know what more I have to offer, but I know I'll be going through a lot of these on your list, so I thank you for that!

First, how do you feel about silent films? If you're looking for 'quiet and personal', silent is the way to go! Try:

Street Angel (1928)
Ménilmontant (1926)
Coeur fidèle (1923)
City Girl (1930)
Hindle Wakes (1927)
Lazybones (1925)
The Docks of New York (1928)

If that's not your thing, here's some others I hope you might like that I think meet the description of what you are looking for:

Beau Travail (1999)
I Fidanzati (1963)
Slow Moves (1983)
The Priest and the Girl (1966)
L'Atalante (1934)
Voyager (1991)
Solaris (2002) (Yes, I think Soderbergh's version is fantastic)
La Notte (1961)
The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978)
Deep Valley (1947)

I also feel like some of my favorite classic westerns might be up your alley. Let me know if you'd like me to list my favorites of those.
