The New World, same director, and incredibly beautiful. One of my favorite movies of all time.

reply

Great movie, thanks. I saw it a few years back.

reply

Walkabout (1971) from Nicolas Roeg, probably one of the most beautiful films I've seen.

reply

Walkabout was pretty good.

reply

2 rather obvious ones from 1975 - Barry Lyndon and Picnic At Hanging Rock. I´m sure you´ve seen these, too.

"facts are stupid things" - Ronald Reagan

reply

Yup. Barry Lyndon years ago, Picnic at Hanging Rock just last week.

reply

Just once? That´s a terrible oversight.

"facts are stupid things" - Ronald Reagan

reply

What? That I've haven't seen Barry Lyndon again?
I rarely watch films twice. I haven't the time.

Besides, it's a little too emotionally distant for my taste.

reply

Oh OK. And Lynch´s The Straight Story would also fit your bill I think.

"facts are stupid things" - Ronald Reagan

reply

Oh, thanks for the mention. I've been meaning to check it out.

reply

This movie has lifted its core theme from a 1977 bollywood movie 'Gharonda'.

reply

I don't know if it's available but 'Elvira Madigan' in its day was famous for its beautiful photography. You might also check out Bergman's 'Virgin Spring'.

reply

McCabe & Mrs. Miller. I think you might like this one. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067411/

reply

You might've seen all these already, but I'll put them here anyways in case there are some you haven't seen yet:
Badlands (1973) [by Terrence Malick]
Thin Red Line (1998) [also by Terrence Malick]
Ran (1985) [by Akira Kurosawa]
Harold and Maude (1971) [by Hal Ashby]
Out of Africa (1985) [by Sydney Pollack]
Five Easy Pieces (1970) [by Bob Rafelson]

Two recent films with great photography:
The Fall (2006)
The Fountain (2006)

reply

Thanks, sandor-enckell
I've seen all those. Some good films.

The Assassination of Jesse James (2007)

Incredible cinematography!

Girl With A Pearl Earring

The Scent of Green Papaya

The Go-Between

The Spirit of the Beehive

I have posted about the great Chinese director Zhang Yimou here on another subject, but many of his films would fit this list. Try:

Ju Dou

Raise the Red Lantern

To Live

All great works....

reply

One more - Wim Wenders "Paris, Texas."

Haunting...

reply

I gotta second The Assassination of Jesse James.. beautiful cinematography, dialog, and similar to Days of Heaven: the narrator really carries the story perfectly. Also, you'd probably enjoy Frozen River (2008).

reply

"Paris, Texas" was good, just saw it. "The Assassination of Jesse James" was good too, saw it a couple years ago. Thanks for mentioning "Frozen River".

reply

I just watched Paris, Texas today. I thought it was amazing, thanks for your list by the way, I've been going through it.

reply

You're welcome. There's a certain unifying factor to all these films, a feeling of reality that connects with me. I made this list because I knew that other people out there must be searching for the exact same type of film as I am.

Atanarjuat: the Fast Runner (2001) - the arctic cinematography, by itself, impresses but it gives such reinforcement to the loneliness, the desperation, the yearning.
Chungking Express (1994) - set in an extreme of urban noise but so personal and subtle.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) - has this cinematography ever been surpassed? Even the most violent sequences carry a quality of stlllness and contemplation. And all the things left unspoken as these characters struggle to become honorable are yet conveyed with impact.
How do you feel about animation?
Millennium Actress (2001) - extremely beautiful, often low-key and deeply personal.
