shareBadlands will always hold a special place in my heart.
shareI agree that it is his best. An excellent film.
shareI think The Thin Red Line is his best, but Badlands and Days of Heaven are not too far behind.
sharePersonally my favorite is The Thin Red Line, I think that film is a masterpiece. I would put Badlands just behind that, almost a masterpiece. Day's Of Heaven would be my third favorite by default. The only other film of his I've seen is Tree Of Life and I didn't enjoy that one at all. I give DOH an 8/10. Badlands 9/10 and TTRL 10/10. I'm in the process of watching more of his films.
shareFor me yes, it's his best film. I really love everything about it, i think this is cinema at it's purest. Sound and image come together so beautifully here, it's just magic. The least i liked is probably Tree of Life, while it's an amazing achievement in cinematography, it kinda left me cold, it feld phony most of the time.
shareThe Tree of Life will always be Malick's masterpiece.
Badlands, Days of Heaven, and The Thin Red Line are perfect films (10/10)
The New World has its moments, but ultimately can't reach the cinematic climax (7/10)
To the Wonder's visuals are as good as any of the other's, but the story falls short (7/10)
I used to think The Tree of Life was his masterpiece, but then I thought he doesn't really even have one. They're all good and different, but still share some similarities. Now that I've seen The Tree of Life 10+ times, I believe it isn't perfect. I think the whole last 20 minutes were just weird and diminished the previous hour and 45 minutes or so we just saw. And sometimes the momentum of the movie was a bit rocky.. but for the most part it was a masterclass in directing and acting. I saw Days of Heaven and The Tree of Life in a double feature just tonight and Days of Heaven was a bit the same. VERY good, but falls just short of being perfect
shareI still think Thin Red Line is his best film for me, but Badlands, Tree of Life and Days of Heaven run it close. I definitely think DOH is his most beautiful shot film imo, fantastic soundtrack by Ennio Morricone and the cinematography is some of the best you ever see.
For anyone to get the style of Malick and his filmmaking, Days of Heaven is perfect place to start as it's pretty short film for him.
The Thin Red Line is my favourite but Days of Heaven is a VERY close second, and would possibly be my pick for most beautifully shot colour movie ever.
The only reason I hesitate to rank it first is that Gere and Adams are pretty wooden in it (Shepard and Manz are excellent)... but this is the kind of movie which can easily survive a couple of poor performances.
Badlands is also superb.
