Analogy of Ending (spoiler)

I think the end of this film was great, with the soccor game, and very deep and sybolic, having Americans playing a game that they ended up being told NOT to win... That's what the Vietnam war was right from the beginning, and is why we lost... Because we weren't supposed to win... Great film... Should be on DVD... Great cast... I love the Boys of Company C..."

I quite agree, the ending is very profound and symbolic. A great all around film, nice ensemble cast, and poignant at times. A movie that gets missed but shouldn't and YES, THIS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE ON DVD, LETTERBOX, PLEASE! (if anyone out there is listening!!!!! )

Oh so THAT'S why the US embassy had to be evacuated by Marine helicopters in '75 as the NVA tanks were rolling into Saigon.

Stop being an idiot, read a history book or 5.

Obviously you haven't read too many history books or consulted with many veterans of that war.

People, we did win. They signed the cease-fire agreement with Sect. of State Henry Kissenger shortly after Nixon won re-election. The Nixon adminstration had a secret agreement with the south that we would come to their aid if the north attacked. But when Nixon was ran out of office, Ford took over. He asked for 'permission' for congress to aid the south but was turned down by a democratic house of reps That was still dancing on Nixon's grave so-to-speak. All Ford could do is watch as south vienam fell and Ted Kennedy and Mrs. Hanoi (Jane Fonda) Congratulated themselves on a job well done. When Hanoi Jane dies, the north vietnam should give her a state funeral and bury her next to ho-chi-min.

I'm not sure who won the Vietnam War- I guess whoever made Huey helicopters and M-16s. And their shareholders. If anyone else benefited from the war, it is news to me.

Now if I can be so bold as to comment on the actual movie as opposed to trying to decide the winner of the war on an Internet thread ... I thought the ending was really forced and marred the movie- was a sporting contest between American soldiers and South Vietmanese forces ever attacked by the Viet Cong? There were so many realistic scenarios that could have been used to get the point across in a more meaningful way. But I think at the time Hollywood liked to see a little sports in its movies.

If you ladies and gentlemen want to continue debating who won the war on this thread, more power to you. But I suggest you do the right thing and send the party that you decide is victorious a fruit basket as an acknowledgement of your ground-breaking decision.

And I don't know what anyone will do with Tokyo Rose or Hanoi Jane or Pyongyan Ethel, but I suggest we dump Ted Kennedy's ashes in lack Chapaquiddick when he succumbs to his tumor.

McStallen, I had to repley to you directly. I do agree with you. I was responding to another blog and got off track. I didn't really mean to ask who really truely won, if that is a sane question to ask. The movie was a compliation of many different events that took place during the war, all within an hour and a half movie. It will be one hell-of-a fruit basket someone will be getting. So much happened during that time, in america and vietnam. I personally leave it to politicians and speedfreaks to decide the issue, who won. Utimately, I just wanted to make sure no one would try to blame the army or marine combatents, navy and airforce fliers and pilots; and military personel who fought the war. I, perhaps foolishly, believe the war was lost here in america, not in vietnam, but that is me.

@McStallen: I must congratulate you on your intelligent and insightful answer among a sea of regurgitated brainwashing on both imaginary political sides.

Our soldiers, seamen, and airmen won the Vietnam War.

Congress lost it.

reply

Politically, we lost the war because we left without a clear-cut military victory on the ground. However, the US was not defeated militarily either. The last US troops left in 1973, and a few months later the North launched a full-scale invasion of the South, and in two years they took Saigon. The US embassy was evacuated because they were the only US troops to still be in the country after two years.

We didn't win, we didn't lose. But our mission failed, because South Vietnam eventually fell, but that was partly because the US Congress voted to cut off all military aid to them.
