Why was the dog's birthday so important?

When Lieberman was visiting the former female guard in prison, he asks her when her dog was born. She says "December 11" and there is a dramatic music note immediately after, as if it were very important for some reason.

Can someone explain this? I've seen this movie several times and never understood that...

I was assuming it was Adolph Hitler's birthday but apparently it's not.

Google search turns up Dec 11th as the day Germany declares war on the US after Pearl Harbor but so what. That doesn't seem like a big deal in terms of the dogs birthday.

In the book it looks like the dogs birthday is April 26th. But Hitler's birthday is April 20th so still doesn't make sense.

Okay on the next page of the book it's more clear.

The prisoner gave the birthday of the dog as April 26th. From that Lieberman could deduce that:

The Wheelocks got their baby on July 5th since on that day they gave her a 10 week old dog.

The Guthries got their baby at the end of February and the Curry at the end of March. (4 weeks apart)

And Gurthrie and Curry were killed 4 weeks apart.

End of March (Curry) to July 5th is 14 weeks.
So Wheelock is scheduled to be killed 14 weeks after Curry was killed which would make Wheelock's assasination on the upcoming Feb 22nd.

That's how Lieberman knew when Wheelock was going to get killed.

Honestly it doesn't make much sense but that is what it says in the book.

This
And actually it makes perfect sense.
It’s explained so clearly in the very next scene the original poster couldn’t have been paying any attention.
Then again it’s not exactly the greatest film ever made as I FF my way through it so can’t blame him.

So why in the movie does the prisoner say December 11th?

reply

It had to do when they accepted the adopted baby, she got a dog in return. That set the timing for the eventual murder of the father. It gave them a timeline.

reply

During the interrogation, he asks her for exact dates but she cannot remember, it having been so many years ago. However she mentions her beloved dog, and having first gotten him when he was 10 weeks old at the time. Having one more question and knowing she loved her dog, he asked for the dog's birthday. From the date given, he could add 10 weeks and then know the date he asked for originally.

reply

It makes perfect sense. Lieberman wanted to determine when Wheelock would be murdered, and the birthday of the dog which indicate when the child was given to the Wheelocks, from which date who could determine when the father was supposed to be killed. Mengele was attempting, for all 94 boys to precisely reproduce the events of Hitler's life.
