pryor, keital and kotto

are tops in this film!! great performances by all 3 of these leads. felt very real. pryor's probably the standout just cause he so rarely did dramatic work.

reply

Pryor was a revelation.

I just read on IMDb trivia that Richard Pryor punched Keitel and hit Kotto with a chair........lmao......hilarioussss!!!

reply

Thats True, Pryor really did those things. He hated Keitel and Kotto. Richard was usually a loose cannon back in the 70's and early 80's.

reply

That publicity still from the film where they are all on the sofa after the party, heard it happened before then.

reply

Yes, thats true.

reply

made me enjoy the scene even more.
Schrader on Schrader is a good book.

reply

Me too, it shows what great acting that is.
Thanks for mentioning the book, i'll seek it
out.

reply

Haha at Pryor, he punches the little guy and hits the big guy with a chair.

You aren't kidding. He's the reason that the time-delay was invented for live broadcasts. He was a guest host on Saturday Night Live so they knew they had to come up with a way to have a delay because they knew Richard would use his colorful language. Mel Brooks also wanted him as the role of Sheriff Bart in Blazing Saddles but the studio wasn't OK with it so he got Cleavon Little instead.

Watched it again last night.
keep your eyes on Kotto the whole time, he looks so pissed off. When he first replies to Pryor about doing the robbery, it suits the coming down off coke vibe so well.

reply

Yeah no kidding, i remember he gave burrows
(Cliff De Young) that look, when he was about to call his bluff.

reply

LOL yeah i noticed that as well.. Kotto is an amazing actor!

When you expect nothing, and get everything.. Thats Destiny!

reply

Agreed, he is. All three were really good in here. Keitel & Kotto were/are terrific actors. Pryor was excellent as well.

Pryor’s best performance. He played a real character, not himself.
Oscar caliber.

reply

I agree, Pryor's best serious role, and here's why...

Pryor was an improvisational, inventive stand-up comedian. He often improvised stuff on the spot.

Now you tie a person like that down to a movie script, written by someone else and if the script is not funny, neither is he.

Problem is, Pryor would sometimes resort to silly mugging and face pulling to try and make the lines funny. He did a lot of this in Superman 3. And it just did not work for me, it detracted from his performance.

And the fact that he was shoehorned into a lot of family friendly movies was also going to be a non starter.

But in Blue Collar its clear Schrader just gave him free rein. And it worked beautifully.

reply

Exactly.
