best sound design in film history?

Just think of how important sound design is for the character of a film, especially a science fiction film. All the blaster beams, spaceship roars, explosions, etc have their distinct flavor, and STAR WARS is such a seminal film in this regard. It was so definitive that all the following films in the franchise re-use sound effects from the first one, from the "engine sputtering out" sound effect that was also in a few INDIANA JONES movies to the energy double-explosion that they love to reuse all the time. There's even the infamous "Wilhelm Scream" which the series went on to popularize far beyond earlier films.

It'd be kinda funny to see someone like Corridor Crew change all the sound effects in the movie to uninspired stock sound effects and see how much worse the film would be. I doubt it would have been half as groundbreaking in the hands of a worse sound crew.

I completely agree that it has incredible sound design. This majorly contributed to the unique style and production and overall success of the film. It set new standards, that's for sure.

The musical score is another major contributor. Instead of having a trendy synthesizer score which was common to sci-fi of the seventies, Lucas went with epic orchestral music which really elevated our perception of what was happening on screen.
