Very few people actually saw the original

From very early George Lucas started making edits, changing Jabba, scenarios, colour, effects.

How can one watch the very original unedited version of star wars? Is there even such a thing?

reply

You gotta find the old mediums like VHS and find a VHS player. Disney + versions of the OT are the Special Edition. No option to switch versions. Ebay and Goodwill are your friends.

WRONG sir! some people found original 35mm prints and have scanned and restored them into 4k. i got them.

That's absolute nonsense. The movie was a mega-hit in it's initial release. A huge portion of the worldwide population saw it prior to any alterations.

reply

Quite a few people saw the original.

reply

I should have phrased it better by saying that most people never saw the original and are probably not even aware of all the changes made throughout the years

reply

Ah, I see.

I watched the original theatrical cut in 1978, didnt have a new hope in the crawl andvwas just called starwars

reply

you can find them online. its called "project 4k77". as in 4k quality copies of the origional 1977 release.

reply

That is a good tip, thanks!

cant remember where i got them maybe the usual torrent places. the films are huge like 80gb per film. They also come in afew versions, some with the natural grain which has more detail but the image can look "noisy". some are DNR (digital noise reduction) which gets rid of it and is my prefered look.

but yes they are the literal copies of the prints people saw in theatres all the way back then.

no silly cgi. no crazy color changes.

You can probably purchase a copy of the very original movie itself before George Tinkered with it on Ebay

am I in the minority that actually thinks the Special Editions were a good thing? Han did shoot first, of course, and Vader didn't say "no" before tipping the Emperor, but I liked most of the CG content.. (clearing up the goo underneath Lukes speeder, and seeing Mos Eisley as Lucas more intended it to be)

reply

I dunno... The impression I get on the internet is that EVERYONE hates everything Lucas has done since Return of the Jedi (and a good number hate that as well).

I like the Despecialized Edition but I also like a lot of the tidied up effects and the added aliens, droids and backgrounds. I don't watch movies over again that often but I will probably watch both versions of the original trilogy again in the next few years. Of course, I will also watch the prequel trilogy again so, according to the internet, I am also part of a hated minority. Fuck 'em.

we might get to the stage where the only decent thing Lucas ever did was the asteroid chase, and (spoiler) Vader beings Lukes father (that was a spoiler) (case someone didn't know)
