"Maclunky"

Fuck you, George. Absolutely insane that we have to have fans doing film scans and time-consuming restorations themselves just to get the original films that made Lucas a success. We don't even have a proper anamorphic DVD release of the originals, and he was still fucking around and adding inane trollish bullshit up until the point he sold Lucasfilm. We thought that Vader's "no.... NOOO!!!" and other Blu-ray changes were the final insults, until we got yet ANOTHER version of Han vs. Greedo from beyond the proverbial grave.

Disney Star Wars is trash, but Lucas deserves a giant eternal fuck you for forcing his horrible, damaging, and ever-changing Special Editions on us (that we're still suffering from). He even claims that the original non-SE reels were destroyed in the making of the SE... which would mean that he destroyed them, because film reels don't just magically puff up in smoke after being digitally scanned. The fact that the National Film Registry was unable to receive original prints of the films, points to it being true. Whether it is or not though, what an absolutely disgraceful shit-show.

Also, in the 80s George was all for film preservation, saying things like, "To me, film is historical document and therefore it has practical value... People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society...

A copyright is held in trust by its owner until it ultimately reverts to public domain. American works of art belong to the American public; they are part of our cultural history...

Today, engineers with their computers can add color to black-and-white movies, change the soundtrack, speed up the pace, and add or subtract material to the philosophical tastes of the copyright holder. Tommorrow, more advanced technology will be able to replace actors with "fresher faces," or alter dialogue and change the movement of the actor's lips to match. It will soon be possible to create a new "original" negative with whatever changes or alterations the copyright holder of the moment desires...

In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be "replaced" by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten."

Insanely hypocritical.

All he had to do was offer both versions, like many other films have done. But no, George had to try to rewrite history and literally destroy classic creations. All for his own ego and stubbornness.

I would recommend the fan scanned and restored 4k77 v1.4 and 4k83 v1.3 to anyone who wants to view the actual OT in 4k. 4k77 is a little rough but 4k83 is superb all the way through. With the SE Empire being the least-damaged, it can be used in the middle for the time being. Or get the 1080p Despecialized Edition. They're working on 4k80 as we speak, hopefully it'll be released sooner rather than later.

IMHO comments like this are one reason that Lucas felt free to sell his franchise to Disney.

He gets so much hate and insane rage from the fandom lunatic fringe, that I doubt he feels he owes the fandom a damn thing.

reply

And comments like yours are why fanboys are a plague, defending all kinds of fucked up decisions by someone/a company through blind praise without any critical thought whatsoever. The kind of mentality where there's no accountability whatsoever. If everyone acted like you, we'd have nothing but trash films without respite, because you need to consume, consume, and consume some more - don't dare question the great Lucas, or the deific Disney.

So I take it you're okay with this type of behavior, the behavior that George himself said was "barbaric"? What a top notch apologist you are, advocating for the literal destruction of historical film reels to push a distorted version of classic films with no alternative. But hey, you're George's boy so it's all worth it. Maybe someday down the line when you meet him, he'll specifically remember this post and give you a cookie.

You think I'm going to just blindly praise Lucas because I don't like Disney? Or be a Disney fanboy because I dislike these decisions by Lucas? No, some of us have this thing called a brain, and the ability to use it. The ability to judge things beyond this mindless black and white fanboy mentality you have, which is the antithesis of critical thought.

Absolutely disgraceful, that there's people out there like yourself who condone this type of thing. I mean, the millions of fans who want to purchase the actual films they grew up with and supported for decades... how dare they, am I right? You are seriously messed up.

*By the way, can you point to any other well-known classic films, where a filmmaker has released a distorted version and actively suppressed, even destroyed, the original film? I can't think of any, because doing that is seriously fucked up and insane. "Barbaric... a great loss to society", says Lucas. Yeah, it is.

reply

I wouldn't mind seeing the originals without the updates. I was surprised that I couldn't get them. Oh well, I'm done with star wars anyways. When I was a kid, they were awesome
Now, I can't see the point to care anymore. Maybe an original copy will be released. Until then, RIP. Good memories, but like memories, I don't care to leave them in the past. (I haven't watched a Star Wars movie since revenge of the Sith because it was so awful)

reply

This comment right here -- Why in the HELL are (alleged) adults arguing about Star Wars???

reply

When I was a kid, parents always said movies we liked were stupid.

I think social media just allowed that opinion to echo.

reply

Ah yes, just ignore the entire point about film preservation as a whole, the nature of Lucas' destructive and hypocritical actions, the need for fans to step in to painstakingly restore their favorite films in modern formats, and file it under "arguing about Star Wars".

The real question is, why (alleged) adults have so little perspective and basic comprehension??? This "lolz adults arguing about Star Wars lolz" notion is so ironically childish and disingenuous.

reply

Nice try.

reply

I don't think I'd label it as a "nice try", it actually took almost no effort at all to completely dismantle your post.

reply

"You think I'm going to just blindly praise Lucas because I don't like Disney? "

Oh for fuck's sake. Both sides of an argument can be wrong, all the contestants for a prize can be unworthy of winning, and bitching about one side doesn't mean supporting the other.

As for the rest... tc;dr ("too crazy, didn't read").

reply

Lucas was right to replace the original Death Star sparkler explosion with the Special Edition one. Lucas was right to replace the original Emperor in Empire Strikes Back with the one we all know from Jedi onwards. Lucas was right to replace the Ewok song with the Special Edition music from the SE. The trouble is, those few slight gains are more than offset than offset by all the rest of the shit that was overbaked, idiotic, unneccessary, or just simply overkill.

reply

Just so everyone knows, I don't actually give a rat's ass about the OT Special Editions.

reply

On the balance, far more was lost than gained, so I don't either. The insertion of the Jedi Emperor into Empire is the only change that was truly neccessary. Was it worth it for all the other dumb stuff, though? That's my issue.

reply

Don't care!

reply

Don't be a sore winner.

reply

You *do* care about the special editions, but unlike many fans, you're not irrationally angry.

I am indifferent - don't care at all!

reply

Is that the same as Harmy´s despecialized?

reply

I think its like people who have plastic surgery. Once they do a little they keep going back for more. That´s how it was with GL and his alterations until he finally sold Star Wars to Disney.

reply

2 years later - fuck you, George.

The original Star Wars trilogy is still not available on Blu-ray or Ultra HD, due to his sabotage. Bless the fans who do painstaking work to clean up original film scans so we can at least have some kind of release (Project 4k77, etc).

reply

who gives a fuck. you're being such a snowflake. it's literally a fucking movie. no need to get this mad over a fucking movie dude

reply

Well look at that - do they birth your breed of childish troll in a lab somewhere, or are you just like that naturally? It's uncanny, how predictable and clone-like this type of behavior is.

I guess I'll just go with the standard "you cared enough to respond" comment. You're literally on a movie forum to discuss movies, so if you don't give a fuck about discussing movies, then why are you here?

I guess you care more about being a toxic little shit. Touché.

reply

lmao, cry more. why are you crying so hard?

reply

Really... another clone-like troll comment? Shit, I was honestly expecting a bit more. Did one of my other posts get your panties in a bunch, is that why you're being so pissy and hostile?

If you don't have anything to add to the actual topic of discussion, feel free to go back to whatever cesspit you crawled out from, friendo.

reply

clearly you're the one lacking in originality, pretending you have the upper hand here. i called you out for shitting your diaper over a fictional movie, and now you're trying to spin it on me. lol

i'm being "pissy and hostile" because you are being a fucking moron lol. get over it. welcome to the real world, where things dont go your way.

reply

So, nothing to add to the topic of discussion then? Just more inane clone-like insults and trolling? Sigh.

Now wait a second... you're not "BurningSun" are you? A person who was doing the exact same faux-Conservative trolling like you are in your other posts - which I exposed, causing them to be eternally butthurt and lashing out in topics I created for years afterwards?

Oh shit, I'm laughing. Please tell me it's not true.

reply

more than one person on this site of thousands of people having a brain? gotta be the same person!

you talk like an incel lol. i love it, let me try. Oh shit, don't tell me. You literally think you're smarter than me? Please, I'm laughing. Don't tell me. I literally have an IQ of 250. Try to keep to my level, kiddo.

since im probably making fun of someone with schizophrenia, or some other delusion-based mental illness, i'll probably leave you alone. id say it was fun...but it wasn't.

reply

You know, I'm not sure I believe you, because you're behaving just like him and being such a blatant hostile troll - but regardless, very fitting for the clone theme we have going on here.

For your sake I hope you are BurningSun. If not, it means you don't even have an excuse. You're just... like this.

Either way you're clearly having some personal issues, and a rough go of things. I'm sorry to hear that. You want to talk about it? I'd prefer to talk about Star Wars or movies on this movie discussion forum, but I can listen to your plight instead, bud. I'm here for you.

*This was you as well, wasn't it: https://moviechat.org/tt0117958/Trees-Lounge/60f362f728cd5111528b54f8/Buscemi-needs-to-writedirect-more?reply=610774f5b8c87f0c4d8d3c80

You have such a hard on for me. Where's the crying laughing emoji when you need it? I'm fking dead.

reply

LOL! oh no...you got me....you found another guy who doesnt use proper punctuation...

you also accused another person on this very thread of being me. just sad. im sure you'll assume anyone who disagrees with you on this site is just an army of me?

please log off and get help ffs

reply

Buddy, either that is you or you're literally identical to another Clone Troll™ - either way it's a very sad state of affairs. I'm still here if you want to discuss your (severe) personal issues.

Anyway... I realize I just fueled another 3 years of rock-hard rage with this reveal, so I'll be on the lookout for you in the next thread I create. Next time try to be a little bit less obvious though, it'll make it more interesting (maybe even discuss the actual topic - *gasp*). See you there!

reply

thanks for proving every single one of my points lol. the more you post the dumber and more mentally insane you sound.

reply

Methinks you need a hobby!

reply

Sock account to the rescue? Or just another liberal nutjob troll? This is getting boring.

reply

I’m another sock account!!! You suck!!!

reply

You're going to be a block account if you don't behave yourself, boy.

reply

I admit I have gotten used to the special edition over the years but I would prefer the original special edition with the original actor playing Emporer Palpatine in Empire Strikes Back and the original Special edition of Return of the Jedi that had the older actor as Anakin at the end. I refused to buy the Bluray with the stupid "Nooo!" by Vader in Return of the Jedi. I really hate him making further changes to it. It seems like I will never get my wish.

reply

The Vader change was such a travesty... at that point it almost felt like Lucas was deliberately trolling. Then this Maclunky thing came out and almost solidified it. Could he actually think these changes are for the better? Looking at the prequels and Indy 4, I guess it's a possibility. Either way he is just so far separated from the filmmaker he was when these were originally created.

I would be all for Lucas doing whatever the hell he wanted to with these Special Editions, but the fact that he went out of his way to suppress the originals is what puts him beyond the pale - especially considering the hypocrisy of it with his past statements. Every other filmmaker and company has always presented the option for both versions, and that's how it should have been here. It actually makes a decent case for why an artist or filmmaker maybe shouldn't have absolute control over their works.

reply

I wouldn't mind myself having the original versions of the films in good format. Thing is though I barely remember the original versions of the film. It's been at least the late 90s since I saw the original versions of the film.

reply

I don't really care anymore, I now think Star Wars is massively OVERrated and I just cannot understand the appeal of it, especially the Disney trash.

What baffles me is over the last few years, whenever a new movie was announced or there was a YouTube trailer reaction, they'd all be shouting and/or screaming hysterically at every slightest gimmick, or cheering as a huge crowd waving their plastic toys around. It's just really SAD.

I liked aspects of Star Wars once upon a time, but it just feels too... diluted and contaminated now with all manner of bullshit.

reply

You can be angry if you want, but Maclunky is an awesome word. Probably means FU.

If you want to get upset over anything it would have to be that awful musical out of nowhere in the Cantina with the weird singers.

Maclunky to them.

reply

You mean in Jabba’s palace, I think?

reply

Could be, I may be remembering it wrong, but I still hate that scene

reply

I'm pretty sure MacLunky must be something of a fu-k you to the fans, given that it's pretty much the sh-t cherry on top of the sh-t cake that they turned that scene into.

It's just so ridiculous - This Greedo dude is holding a gun to Solo's head and Solo retorts "I bet you have" at which point he'd instantly blast him. But no, now he lets him talk first so he can get the MacLunky line before shooting him!

Mind you, knowing Disney this probably won't be the end of it. I'm sure a retcon will reveal this MacLunky chap to be another bounty hunter and rival of Solo's and we'll get the whole padded out story in some other crappy production...

reply

What's even cheesier, to me, is that in this age of CGI and Disney's billions of dollars it could use to recreate a shot or two of Greedo talking, that they had to resort to using existing footage of him saying "Yakoska" earlier in the conversation and re-dubbing it with "Maclunky". I mean, come on! Not only do they make changes to make the movie worse, but do so utilizing the absolute minimal possible effort.

reply

True.

On a kind of related note, I was laughing lately when watching Adywan's ANH Revisited (a fan edit).

When George Lucas made his "special" editions, he did all this stupid stuff like adding Jabba into the first film, yet he didn't even do the basics to actually make the film better.

e.g. This Adywan chap changed the Falcon cockpit to show they were moving at light speed when Han is talking to Leia after they escape from the Death Star. The original film just has a star field in the background! And there's a shot of R2D2 replying to threepio also in the Falcon, only R2 is still on the Death Star!

So it made me laugh - Whether it was Lucas himself or Disney they do this stupid superfluous nonsense and it's actually just fans fixing details which actually improve the film!
