sadly it's overrated

i Really wanted to love this flick, but sadly it's not even the best film in the nazi zombies sub-genre, it falls short to Rollin's Zombie Lake and even to Jess Franco's Oasis Of the Zombies. not saying i didn't have fun, i sure did but still the freaking hype was waaaaay off this time. the movie drags, we don't get enough zombie action and when we do it's rather subtle.

I feel the same way. This looked interesting and i wanted to love it seeing how hilarious the plot was... but sadly, I didin't like it that much.

Worse than Zombie Lake and Oasis of the Zombies? You are impossible to take seriously after that statement.

reply

What a moron!! Shock Waves is far superior to zombie lake and Oasis...

How on earth could this be over-rated when this movie is very under-rated?

Again, kids on these boards don't even know what over-rated means.

i see i've hit a nerve here with the zombie lake/oasis of the zombies statement...:)

you folks shouldnt take it so hard ( or take me seriously if you dont wish to), it's just an opinion. of course this movie is underrated in a way,but that's just because almost no one knows of it. but within the people who like special genre flicks like these, this film is rated pretty high.
what bothered me the most is that the filmmakers took the movie very seriously , but didnt have the capability to pull through it. as i said, there were not enoguh zombies to satisfy my thirst. and when they did show up, they did almost nothing.

i draw back from saying Shock Waves is infirior to Oasis Of The Zombies. but i still liek Zombie Lake better. the main proof is , that i was able to watch ZL more then once. this while i havent visited SW a second time. Lake just have way more camp value and is like reading a trashy poem.

I think it's a very under-rated movie, almost forgotten until Blue Underground released it.

I didn't think it was boring either. It was very creepy almost scary and what was great was that it didn't need to show gore. The zombies weren't designed to be flesh eaters, they just killed anyone they got their hands on.

I think what most people on this thread thought was that this was gonna be another cheap, bloody Italian zombie movie and it was so much more than that.

reply

So much less than that I think you mean...!!!!

I can't write it off completely but seriously, atmosphere wise, Zombie 2 or any of Fulci's other films urinate all over it. Not to say I hated the film, but was gutted after it turned out to be a massive waste of a really good idea.

im 19, me and a friend desided to smoke a joint or 2 and watch this, it was scary, not violant, but the whole zombie walking around 1 km down in the water freaked me out

reply

I don't know...worse than Oasis and Lake? I prefer Shock Waves to both of the other films mentioned. Don't get me wrong, I love, and own, all three of the films, and I admit that Shock Waves has it's flaws and some major pacing issues, but all in all I'll take it over the others. And I'd definitely take it over Revenge of the Zombies.

although i can see where the o.p. is cmoing from, to me, shock waves has great atmosphere and a striking visual style. while it's not all that scary, and there's not a lot of action or violence, there is a really creepy vibe going on that is quite unique.

I know that I'm responding to a post that is more than 4 years old, but the original post gave me a chuckle.

"the freaking hype was waaaay off this time"

Hype? Really? For THIS movie?

I am 32 years old, and I have NEVER personally met anyone who has even heard of this movie..and I have a bunch of geeky film buddies. I have to come to IMDB to bump into a handful of poster worldwide that have seen and cared to comment on this movie.

When I bought the DVD a few years back, I showed it to my friend and he laughed his ass off at the critic on the DVD cover ("The best of the nazi zombie movies"). His response: They made more than one?

Hehe...Sorry, I just think it's kinda funny that you knew enough people who had seen this movie before you and "hyped" it up for you. I actually think it's a miracle that it ever got a DVD release. I certainly never expected it and was actually getting ready to purchase a VHS copy, just like so many other forgotten genre flicks that are never gonna get a DVD release.

It's totally overrated.

It's definitely superior to the films you mentioned but I agree it's painfully slow. Lethargic is actually a good description.

Just saw it for the first time having heard of its cult reputation and was very disappointed. With some fairly well-known cast members the production values were much lower than I'd expected. Admittedly Cushing and Carradine, the most famous actors, checked out after about only 10 minutes on screen. The DVD transfer I saw also *looked* awful, although since the film was shot on 16mm with a tiny budget I suspect it always looked that way. The story had potential but wasn't handled in a suspenseful or scary manner. Even the director says in the commentary that he finds the film somewhat embarrassing. 3/10 at best.
