Who was that jerk basketball player that elbowed Henry in the face? What was his beef?

Back in the 70s and 80s, basketball teams used to have goons and fights were not uncommon. Obviously this guy was told by the coach to rough up Steele. Today, the Coach and the goon would probably be arrested.

Not really. The goons and the physical play were much more interesting to watch

He was a "specialist" brought in from the outside (you never see this guy anywhere else in the movie) to presumably teach the team a lesson in keeping your cool in a heavy contact sport, while at the same time attempting to humiliate Henry into renouncing his scholarship.

Actually, the thug was a specialist brought in to demoralize Henry specifically. The idea was to get him to renounce his scholarship.
