Why do so many people prefer this one over the remake?

I've seen the remake lots of times, mainly cuz I'm a Lindsay Lohan fan (i'm a fan of her acting, not her behavior lol) and my mom rented the original with Jodie Foster and I thought it'd be interesting to see Jodie's acting as a younger girl. But honestly, this one was just WEIRD. Yeah, I know it's original, but original isn't always better. Some things in this movie that just seemed weird:

- When Anabelle's mom switches into her daughter's body, she doesn't act like a teenager at all. I mean yeah, she's supposed to be confused on how to act, but she keeps calling her friends "young lady" over and over, it's like c'mon, I think she should at least know that Anabelle or any other regular teenager doesn't address their friends as "young lady". She just seemed so out of it, it wasn't even funny. At least in the remake, it was actually funny when Lohan was the mom inside the daughter's body. But it was so irritating in the original.
-Anabelle (in her mom's body) starts doing the laundry, and throws shoes in the washing machine? I mean c'mon, anyone with common sense knows not to throw SHOES in a WASHING MACHINE.
-Also, when Anabelle (in the mom's body) was at home and all those people were showing up and yelling at her and all that chaos....even the real mom wouldn't have been able to handle all that chaos. NO ONE CAN. No one is THAT demanding.
-THe part I really don't get is why is it so important for Anabelle to water ski for the dad's work?? What does her skiing have to do with his work at all? seriously? and then they all sink into the water and just laugh about it? wtf?

And there's lots of other stuff that I didn't get, but that's all I'll say for now. I mean, everyone says the original is better just cuz it's original. If you do prefer the older one, can you please explain why? I don't get it. The remake was just more believeable and the writing was better, i Just got bored with the original. I won't trash you if you disagree with me, but I'd like to hear other's opinions on this.

The remake was good, but I think the original was much better. Jodie Foster is a better actress, which probably had a lot to do with why I think it's better. Also, I just like older type 70's movies like this. I thought this version was much funnier too, I just liked it better overall.

"Why... so... serious?"

the original 1 is so much better than the new one. i don't like the new 1 at all. i love the original 1 so much because i am a really big fan of jodie foster.

reply

I agree that the original isn't *ALWAYS* better, but in this case I think the original is better (the music to is great.....can't believe I admit that) I do like the newer version of Parent trap rather than the older one though

reply

Me too. The old Parent Trap was good, but it always bothered me that Hayley Mills used her real accent. Okay, so she might be able to make it work for Sharon (from Boston), but there is no way she can seem like she belongs in California unless she fakes an accent.

At least Lindsay was willing to fake an accent so the movie made sense.

But there is one particularly great line in the old movie: "Are you a boy or a girl? Make up your mind!" (or something to that extent...it's been awhile)

Movies are remade becuase the powers that be feel that the current crop of children/teens won't understand the previous generation's movie. I grew up with the original and find it surpasses the remake by leaps and bounds. Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster are far Far better than Lindsey Lohan. Jamie Lee Curtis however, as an acress is quite on par with Foster and Harris, albiet playing the mother in a contemporary manner (divorce' and remarraige into the mix as a plot theme notwithstanding).

Most of today's teens and children would rather watch a remake becuase it is who they align with, who they relate to, wheras people who grew up with the original, either in theatres or on television, have an affinity to it. At 28, I saw this movie as a child on television and enjoyed it, and as an adult now, enjoy it for its nostaligc (to me) look at "the past" and in some way, my childhood. Though the bicentennial theme is long gone from American history, and we've got microcomputers instead of pencils in math class, the theme of the original film remains true. The remake, in my opinion, is a sad shell of the original.

Also, I'd like to say that Lindsey Lohan was cute in the Parent Trap remake, but that's where it ended for me; and I also enjoyed the Halley Mills original version much Much better than the remake of that too.

Two words: Barbara Harris.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

The original with Jodie Foster is better hands down and that's why people prefer it to the remake. Barbara Harris is one of my favorite actirs as she is unique and gives it her all in everything she stars. She is a truly gifted lady. Vicki Shreck gave a really funny performance as Virginia. Also loved the scene on the bus when Annabel was thinking about certain things and shouting out loud and that lady passenger on the bus said, " What's with her, something wrong with her noggin"

reply

Better acting, better story. Yes forgive me but I found Barbara Harris' acting better playing the mom then Jamielee Curtis. Jodie Foster's acting is a billion times better than Lohans. The story was funnier and more enjoyable. Original is a classic. Remake is mediocre.

I liked John Astin in this movie. His reactions when Jodie as his wife calls him 'Daddy' are so funny!

reply

It's because a lot of people have the hots for Jodie Foster when she was in flicks like this and Taxi Driver such as SouthParkLuvr
