Close Encounters is a dumb and annoying movie
I can't stand the movie.
Plus why would the aliens terrorize the mother and kid in the first place anyway?
Agree 100%.
Nothing makes sense, all characters are unsympathetic, and the pseudo- "scientific accuracy" is laughable. If it hadn't been released on the coattails of Star Wars, today it would be a "camp classic". It's become the ultimate example of a "popcorn flick", 2 hours of smugly self-congratulating mindless garbage masquerading as entertainment. Admittedly, the 1970s were a dreary decade in general, but this movie is the ne plus ultra.
