What do you feel about african nations that had practiced slavery for centuries prior to any "white" man's influence?

What do you feel about african nations that still practice slavery today?

What do you feel about the silence on these topics from race-baiting slime like farikan, jessie hijackson and al sharpton?

I don't feel guilty my dads family came to America in 1918 from Ireland because he had to come here, my mom is from Ireland but straight off the boat...lol. According to the stories from my family the Irish were treated just as bad as the blacks. There were signs that said No Irish here, or we do not serve Irish etc...

I understand the hurt blacks feel, I understand the institutionalized racism that some say still exist today to keep blacks in their place, and I understand that racism still exist today. But what I don't understand is after hundreds of years free from slavery with the ability to get an education and better themselves that blacks still live the way they do and complain that the white ppl are oppressing them. Blacks in America have the same chance at education that any American, heck even non -American has yet they don't seem to take advantage of that fact. Blacks seem to like to blame instead of take responsibility.

My great, great, great..etc grandfather came here from Ireland in 1918 because he was fighting for his country and was targeted to be murdered. But within 2 genertaions my family had a buisness going, the kids went to college and within another 2 generations my family was well off.

I know blacks in America had it rough, but why does every other group of ppl that come to America within a couple of generations get themselves together and become prosperous. Yet blacks can't seem to do the same.

"Do you really feel bad for what your ancestors did to blacks"

People should feel bad for what they did to fellow HUMANS. Infact, slavery came in all colours. Still, it is said that the majority of Black Americans (and a great deal of Gaels) are descended from Slave. That is certainly disgusting and really shows that the US certainly was not ''Land of The Free''.

Maybe b/c modern day slavery still exist today as well as oppression against blacks. Actually, I know more non-blacks who complain about what the WHITE MAN did to them, so just because you don 't know of any complaining doesn't mean there aren't any. And how do you know what your ancestors did?

So your'e saying that you know for a fact that NONE of your ancesotrs lived anywhere else? Slave owners weren't just in the South you know. So,you can account for EVERY SINGLE ONE of your ancestors, that's interesting. I can't say that your ancestors were slave owners or not, but it's just interesting how you can account for each blood line and where they lived or did not live!

I have not read all the posts but wanted to respond to the originator …

There are several things you fail to realize or do not fully grasp …

You did not put forth YOUR answers to the questions you pose. “Do YOU really feel bad for what YOUR ancestors did to blacks, do you care or do you feel it has nothing to do with you?” … “…how do YOU know what YOUR ancestors did?” and are you saying, “you can account for EVERY SINGLE ONE of your ancestors”?

You fail to take into account the numbers and history …
If anyone goes back 7 generations he would have 254 direct ancestors and then you would have to add their brothers, sisters and cousins etc. I can say with certainty that anyone who reads this post has a murderer, wife beater, thief AND SLAVEHOLDER in their family tree. So what is YOUR answer to the questions or didn’t you know Africans owned Africans.

You seem to imply that one must feel guilt if they are of a race that historically held slaves. Although I dismiss this implication as crap, it would mean everyone is guilty.

There is no racial or collective guilt that can be placed on the individual. This argument is put out there to exact a collective apology … Who apologizes for slavery, who apologizes for Nazi atrocities, who apologizes for the Rwandan acts of genocide?

An individual IS responsible for his own actions and owes NOTHING for what HIS ancestor may have done (although you are implying a person may owe something for what someone else’s ancestor may have done)

I agree with LesterFester here regarding the overall premise of the original poster's question. I was thinking about this earlier in the thread when someone was chiding another poster that they can't know what EVERY one of their ancestors did and maybe, just maybe, one of them might have owned slaves. But what if they did? What are they supposed to do about it now?

I agree that the idea of collective racial guilt is crap, as it's a dangerous precedent to set which could be used against any race or collective group of people.

Not only that, but it blatantly ignores the many countless white people who opposed slavery and fought to end it. If some of my ancestors were slaveholders and some were Abolitionists and Union soldiers, should I take all the blame for the bad ones and none of the credit for the good ones? This can get confusing if you really take a look to analyze the whole concept of collective guilt. Some of my ancestors helped to defeat the South and end slavery. That should count for something, I think.

The film was great, and slavery was bad. My ancestors came from Eurpose after slavery was outlawed.

What do you think about this film, and other films and books like it such as "Mandingo" and "Drum"? They demean blacks, but are part of history.

Of course not.

Or do you think that there’some kind of „inherited guilt“?

Hey, wouldn‘t that be „racist“? ;-)

And why do ONLY whites get asked that question -
what about people from other races who traded slaves for centuries, e. g. Arabs or other black Africans?

Of course I don't feel guilty. First of all I'm not descended from wealth so my ancestors didn't own slaves. Second of all I don't feel guilt for things I didn't do. Do you feel guilt for all the ethnic cleansing happening in Africa? Do you feel guilt when a black gang member commits a drive-by shooting? Do you feel any guilt over OJ? I hope you don't. Just because you share a skin color in common with someone doesn't mean you share guilt for their crimes. Nor should guilt be transferred through the generations.
