It's hard to tell whether the OP is a troll or a loud mall-brat who lives in a cultural vacuum. There are few differences between the two.

Now, please, Angel 44, don't lump all of us Americans together. I live in the American Midwest, and I really like this show. In fact, I'm watching it right now. I came on IMDB to look up some info on the actors.

I read and loved all of James Herriot's books while I was in middle and high school. And as for British television in general, I am a great fan of Agatha Christie mysteries. I never miss the Miss Marple and Poirot shows if I'm home. Midsomer Murders is another favorite.

I'm American, and darned proud of it. I love some of the British series and "All Creatures Great and Small" is one of them. It is an excellent series. One of the things that makes it so good is the character development. This is something that is almost totally lacking in most American series and the sit-coms, which I gave up watching years ago, are among the absolute worst.

My wife, ten years my junior, alos likes this show. This goes to show how good this show really is. My wife prefers thinks like "I Love Lucy" where the comedy is slapstick and hit the watcher over the head with a two-by-four whereas I prefer comedy that is more subtle and cerebral.

How sad that we are seen in this way. I am an American, and I love All Creatures Great and Small. I also love Great Britain; we were fortunate enough to be able to spend several months there. It is a beautiful country, full of History and lots of very lovely people.

Just a memory refresher for everyone bashing Americans: The Herriot stories were not originally well-liked in the UK. The Herriot books became well known because of American readers who adored the stories and made them best sellers. Check it out.

I adore this series, because it is simple, realistic storytelling at its finest and of an era long gone. I read the books, the first 3, way back, probably the 1st after the 1st season aired on US PBS. Hooked, cried! enthralled. The writing pulls one in; the show is so very true to the characters and the actors perfect representations of the main characters. I rented the original 3 seasons in 2007 when I had a litter of puppies and needed to stay awake for the first 10 days for the 1am to 5am shift and thought: what will really keep me interested? Watching again for the first time in 20 years this series! At the time I found out Netflix also had other years I'd never seen, perhaps had not run in the US at all... the later seasons and some specials. Can't say that all of them were as interesting as the original 3 seasons and one of the first specials, but Christopher was in all of them and well, much better than most of the trash (i.e., plot-driven with no characterization or all about death) on American TV these days.

The restraint by British writers in suggesting things that are never talked about is something American television never approaches. I am thinking about Siegfried's "visiting Mother" in Broughton which the other characters gradually come to understand is a euphemism for spending time with women. It's never discussed, never articulated, but the subtle little amused reactions of the various characters make the audience understand this perfectly.

It's the way things happen in real life, when we love someone and don't want to expose their foibles although we perfectly understand what is going on. It's about the comedy of human nature, whereas American tv comedy by contrast is about cheap laughs that don't touch you on any emotional level.
