Old Helen or New?
I much prefer Carol Drinkwater to Lynda Bellingham. The new one (Lynda) is probably closer to the REAL Helen, but I still like Carol better. Which do you like?

Of course the old Helen is better. The program {and the books} is not really an autobiography, but a novel. Helen, as portrayed by Carol Drinkwater, is a part of the fantasy we read in the books. Lynda Bellingham - a fine actress - is apparently more true to the real Helen. As far as enjoying the complete story, obviously the first Helen wins it.

At first, I found the new Helen so different that watching her was almost jarring. Over time, I found it easier to accept her in the role and I think she got better in it as the series progressed. I wished they hadn't dressed her so dowdy and that they had given her better scripts from time to time.
I do prefer Carol Drinkwater to Lynda B. I only just today learned of the affair between Chris and Carol. That may account for their lovely chemistry. I also read that Alf and Joan Wight felt the affair reflected badly on them and their feelings probably led to Carol's departure. What a shame. Chris Timothy says in the more recent ACGAS documentary that he has no regrets but wishes he had handled it differently. One can only wonder if he does, indeed, have regrets that he let her go. Only the two principals know for sure.
He is a miracle . . . really.
It is neat to know they had something going on. That kind of thing seems to happen with good actors in such roles. I was always told the new one had a father that was involved in the series, and the thing about Carol going off to Aussie land. Too bad she married the director (another thing that always happens) because I always wanted to marry her myself...being a bit younger than her may have not gone over the best though.
shareOld. Helen. I always wanted to do private and naughty things with Carol Drinkwater......
Some people are afraid of the unknown. I don't know why, and it scares me.
I LOVE Carol Drinkwater. Their courtship was engaging and her character was wonderful. Add to that her natural beauty, and "Bob's your uncle" as they say!

My mother is one of the few people in the world who prefers "cold" Helen. However, I think it's because she read the Herriot books' prior to seeing the show, and Lynda Bellingham's portrayal of Helen is a more accurate portrayal of the "real" Helen in the books.
When it comes to the show, there's no heterosexual male on the planet that would deny Carol Drinkwater's charisma, and charm. This is your dream wife, no matter where you live.
I thought it was funny that Helen didn't get angry towards James until the end of series three. Of course the stress of entering WWII was there. Yet it was the Polish female vet the practice wanted to hire to replace Herriot, and Farnan that set her off! Helen saw that three men (Tristan included) lost their minds over this "exotic" Polish vet, and Helen decided to take charge.
The two Christmas specials 1983,and 1985 were brilliant for Drinkwater. She really displayed a full range of emotions, and she's been missed since they continued in 1988. Lynda Bellingham improves as the series continues, but it's not the same.
Hello everybody
I am currently re-visiting ACGAS ( the shows ran on a PBS station here in
the midwest,USA back in the 70/80s) these shows are now on netflix so I have
been going through then again.
I just finished watching series 5, ep #3 and am wondering what is going on
with Lynda Bellingham always being in bed with hip trouble ? is this just a
plot device or was she really hurt, pregnant ? or what ? anybody know ?
If it's just a plot thickener, they could put her arm in a sling for the
same amount of episodes, to show these guys NOT coping with running the house.
I know this is semi-silly, I will watch ep. 4 tomorrow and she might be dancing
around Skeldale House like a ballerina for all I know.
It's just that often as not this nonsense is done for some reason...

I prefer Carol Drinkwater, she brings so much warmth to the part!
Why did they replace her at all???
Carol Drinkwater lives with her French husband on an olive farm in Southern France/Provence and writes wonderful autobiographies about her life on the farm.
Check out amazon.co.uk.
With all due respect to the fine Lynda Bellingham (who later appeared with the great Peter Davison in an episode of "The Last Detective"), I agree that Carol Drinkwater was the absolute best as Helen Herriot.
Yes, Carol Drinkwater, an actress of charm, depth, beauty, and an oh-so-zaftig figure, if you've ever seen her in one of her later films, "An Awfully Big Adventure." Oy vey!!!
I prefer Carol Drinkwater. She's the better actress and had a broader range of expression. But Lynda Bellingham does not put me off as I was afraid she would. She's just sort of flat after Carol Drinkwater.
shareDrinkwater was the best, Bellingham never caught the character as far as I'm concerned.
Its that man again!!
I think Carol Drinkwater was the best Helen. I never liked Lynda's portrayal, it's a great shame Carol left the series.
It is my business to protect your majesty.... against all things.
It's the old Helen for me.
