Am I the only one who liked this film?

This film ain't gonna win any Oscars anytime soon, but I thought it was a good B-movie.It is like a color version of one of those Roger Corman pictures, but better.

Not at all. I love the movie. I think it's effective and creepy. Sure, there are a few things that are laughable (just about any film has goofy parts), but overall it's a standout in the nature-on-the-rampage 70's cycle.

Most people who think this movie is so bad are the MST3K disciples, who don't think for themselves and just consider anything the 'bots make fun of to be "bad." You can witness the MST3K-sheep factor in the IMDB top 100, where films like Track of the Moon Beast is rated worse than Beast of Yucca Flats, or Girl in Gold Boots is considered a worse film than The Creeping Terror. That's because the Track of the Moon Beast and Girl In Gold Boots episodes of MST3K got played in heavy rotation during a several-year stretch when the Sci-Fi Channel only had about a dozen MST3K episodes to rotate. That's also why The Bat People and Touch of Satan are on that list at all. I mean, these aren't great movies, but... top 100 worst ever? Not hardly, when we still have dreck like An American Haunting to contend with.

I like MST3K, it's funny, but a lot of its fans are total sheep who don't bother making their own minds up about a movie.

Yeah, those MST movies were real gems, ruined by those mean MST jokes! Bastards!

Squirm is a great horror film; head and shoulders above the majority of low-budget 70's horrors. Vastly underrated.

I agree totally. This is a creepy and fun little film. In his commentary on the DVD, Jeff Lieberman says he wanted to include a few more deaths (Geri's friends for example), but bascially the budget wouldn't allow it.
Squirm was the last movie my girlfriend in high school let me choose. After we went to the movie, we went out to dinner and I ordered spaghetti. That was it for her. From then on out it was chick flicks all the way.

I love this movie too. I saw it when it came out in a neighborhood theater in '76. The last part of the film is the best when the power goes out. I Think I'll look for my disc and watch it now.

reply

Same here. I like it too. It's very different. Almost all the cast never appeared in much again.

I love it. =)

I watched the movie last night for the very first time, and I must say I loved everything in it, from the two lovely-naive sisters to the great special effects!

I love this movie and the laid back 70's small town feel it has, not to mention the worms..
Imagine if we could see this gem in 3D, it would be a nauseating good time.

I saw this at a drive-in in 1977 and haved loved it ever since. I have the novelization, various posters from different countries, lobbie cards, stills, etc. I am also a big Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan and have all their episodes in circulation, including the KTMA ones. It does not bother me that they poked fun of the movie and it does not interfere with my enjoying the film for what it is....a fun drive-in flick.

i think this movie is underrated. It is a great movie made in 1976. During it's time, I can say the production is very good. Special effects are nicely done, it is fun movie with some silly premise. Meant to be enjoyed without thinking too much about the plot. Not sure why people do not like it and rate it so low.

reply

Yeah, it's an effective B horror with quality Southern Gothic ambiance.

It's a decent little creature-feature. Don't understand the hate it receives.
