Most cringe worthy moments?

Any time Jolene called Vera "her little shoe button" what was that about?
In the opening credits when Alice is soaking her feet in kitchen pans? Ewwww!

You can't go on blaming yourself forever. Just blame yourself once, then move on.

Beth calling Tommy "Toms"

The time Vera tried to hide her pack of cigarettes from Flo, but Flo knew she had them hidden in her bra, saying, "I noticed there was an extra bulge in there."

Any time Linda Lavin sings.
I love the show, but hate that singing!

Move, and I'll sock ya one!

reply

Yeah I agree Linda was not a good singer. I thought Ellen Burstyn, who protrayed Alice in the TV movie, was a really good singer though.

Just because we lose today's battle doesn't mean we've lost tommorow's war.

Top 5:

Linda Lavin's singing and everyone around her "mooning" over her when she did it. She was ab-so-lutely TERRIBLE!!! FIRST PLACE CRINGE.

Alice getting mistaken for a prostitute and having a clingy gown with no bra on...UGH!!! I do NOT want to think about Linda Lavin's NIPPLES, let alone see them poking out! (VOMIT!!) This comes in 2nd.

Tommy's friend Stretch getting a crush on Alice (ewwww...) comes in 3rd.

Any time Flo wore polyester stretch pants...paunch and camel toe...EWWWW! #4

Mel having his shirt off and you couldn't FIND his nipples because of all the hair...which grew up to his upper arms and shoulders. EWWWW! #5

LOL @ Flo's paunch & camel toe and Mel's hairy body Ewwwww! Is right!

As I get older I see Mel as better looking than I thought he was when I was a teenager watching first run. But he had TOO much body hair. If it was these days , Mel would get a wax! But in the 70's, men were hairy, and women wore tight pants that gave them camel toe, and polyester no less. That is a yeast infection just waiting to happen!!!!! Ewwwww & LOL!!!

Grow up. You must be 10.

This may not be cringe worthy, but it is strange. The episode where Doris Roberts plays Alice's mother. Doris Roberts is only 7 years older than Linda Lavin!

I've only seen the six episodes from TV favorites recently until I buy the first season on DVD, but I would say Flo's farewell everytime Vera cried because someone said the word "Goodbye"

How is it strange? It's all about how old two actors who play parent and child LOOK, not about their true age.

reply

In my opinion, Doris Roberts didn't LOOK 20-30 years older than Linda Lavin.

Most cringe-worthy moment was when Mel was pretending to be some superhero. The show had truly jumped the shark at that point.

reply

I don't know about "cringe worthy", but I did find it odd that a greasy spoon outside Phoenix seemed to be such a celebrity magnet. Jerry Reed shows up, Telly Savalas happens to walk in, here comes Art Carney, George Burns pops up. I know why they brought in celebrities for guest spots, but it seemed like they had a lot of them playing themselves.

reply

I didn't think of Jerry Reed being on the same level as Telly Savalas, George Burns or Art Carney, so I can see Reed stopping at Mel's.

No disagreement on any of these
but have to go with that one
about gayboy T chasing loonie V
around M's Diner
or A's Restaurant
calling her Hot to Trot

What is that all about
also when M Raye comes to town
to click her dentures
at Mel
everytime he says anything

What is that all about
L Lavin's singing
also aint no picnic
unless you go on
really painful picnics

Don't think this show
would make it to reruns
a second time around

And
that is no only because
you would never recognize
this cast
but when they say
P McKeon is 6'2"
but yet L Lavin
and the gang
towers over him

Really really really
What is that all about

That time where Alice had to dress up like a "Happyburger" and shot that cheesy commercial.

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

reply

Whenever Alice called Flo "Floey".

reply

When Alice and Carrie did some risque song and dance number dressed in flashdance-like outfits.

For some reason, Martha Raye bugged me any time she was on.

reply

Nailed it. That show Lavin did the really fast disco version of Rod Stewart's "If You Want My Body and You Think I'm Sexy" is still irreparably lodged in my brain.

And Raye was annoying as hell and pretty abrasive as a mom to Mel. I know, part of the shtick, but I'll take Bette Midler's portrayal of her in "For the Boys" anytime over the actual Raye, who had zero charm to me.

Other cringeworthy episodes were the "Dukes of Hazzard" crossovers. Bo and Luke weren't in them, so WTF was the point by that time, except to show that the networks had no idea how to keep viewers away from cable?

The irony is that both actors who played Enos and Boss Hogg actually had highly respectable careers. But the way they are shoehorned into the "Alice" setting breaks disbelief. The only CBS series that could have made less sense in the show at the time was "The Waltons."
