The plot was 100% inspired by the OPEC embargo of the 1970s, which made life in the US much more miserable than normal for a few years but thankfully didn't do any permanent damage. It hasn't happened since because the Arab countries know they can't win a war against the US. The US and Saudis have been sucking each other's dicks ever since because it's in both of their best interests.
