VIVA CHIBA

Like virtually everyone else on this board, I first heard of "The Street Fighter" (1974) and its sequels, through the character of Clarence Worley (Quentin Tarantino's mouthpiece) in "True Romance" (1993)

i am admitedly a huge fan of tarantino, but am i the only one who saw this before true romance? i mean now the movies have definetly resurfaced because of chibas new status, but i had heard of his films before...

anyway...i guess im the only one...

I discovered the Street Fighter series when one of my friends bought a 10-movies for $20 collection with a bunch of random kung-fu flicks on it. Most of them sucked, but Street Fighter was on there and it opened my eyes to Sonny Chiba.

I haven't seen True Romance yet, so I guess I'll eventually be doing the same as you.

I first bought The Street Fighter from this guy who sold DVDs for $7. I picked this up because it said that it had inspired Quentin Tarantino, so I figured it must be good. It's an okay flick, and I also found a 10-pack of Sonny Chiba films. So now I have two copies, although the $7 one is widescreen...wish I could have the others in WS.

I discovered The Street Fighter series years after I had originally seen True Romance. The showing at the movie theater seemed like such a minor plot point that I didn't pay much attention to it. Although I do like how in True Romance they skip out around 85 minutes of the film and go from start to finish in rapid succession.

I really took hold of Chiba and his kick assedness (my word, leave me the *beep* alone) after seeing Kill Bill volume 1. So Tarantino still caused my interest in The Street Fighter series, just not with True Romance.

I heard about the Street fighter from some Tarantino Reference Sight for Kill Bill. I was shoping at walmart in Canada and found The Street Fighter. I paid only 5$ for it.....It's a good kung-fu flick

I had heard of the movies & Sonny Chiba before I saw True Romance but never paid any attention to them thinking they were just Bruce Lee ripoffs ! (I was young & stoopid!) It wasn't until I saw True Romance in the theatre that I saw what a badass Sonny Chiba was. Never got around to buying them though (never saw them for rent either) until I saw a great cheap DVD from Vintage Video in Pathmark of all places. It has Streetfighter, Sister Streetfighter & Streetfighter's Last Revenge on one disc uncut & widescreen for only $5.99!!!
The original blew me away ! Can't wait to check out the other two soon!

I never saw True Romance... I still need to.

I got into Chiba when I was at a friend's house and he was playing The Executioner. And I had to see all the films after that.

True Romance is amazing. Great cast, great action, decent plot, an all around enjoyable film.

I saw The Street Fighter first. My brother and I bought the "Martial Arts Masters" DVD set at Wal-Mart because we were interested in old martial arts movies but hadn't seen any. The first one we watched was The Street Fighter. About a month later I saw True Romance but I missed the first five or so minutes and therefore missed the Chiba reference.

Yes, I first heard of the film via True Romance (good film by the way). Then when I was in Wal-Mart I saw a DVD case advertizing 14 hours of martial arts. I looked to see what was on it and I noticed, among other films, that the dvd containded the triple feature that was in true romance. So far I watched Street fighter and Return of the Street Fighter. Man Sonny Chiba ROCKS!

reply

I saw the street fighter long before True Romance

I actually heard of "The Street Fighter" on some show that Ice-T hosted called: "Ice-TV the cult S#it" it looked cool and became the second Martial Arts Film I ever saw (Behind "Master Of The Flying Guillotine") I think there was only one episode of the Ice-T show that aired because I never saw it again.
