This really angers people who don't get it, doesn't it?

Wow, reading through the negative reviews - what *is* it about this movie that so riles up its detractors? They go so far beyond stating their own issues with it. They feel compelled to sprinkle invective and insults for the film's fans throughout their comments. It's not enough for them that they don't like, weren't moved by it, didn't "get it", whatever; they have to throw little verbal rocks at those who disagree.

Wonder what it is about the movie that makes them so provocatively offensive and defensive?

Many people were raised with the idea that a movie with the central premise of a great, compelling mystery will definitely provide a satisfactory solution to the mystery. When that doesn't happen, some people are really unhappy and unfulfilled by it.

We are experiencing a very similar situation right now in actual life: the mystery of Flight 370. Is it in the Indian Ocean? Did it crash land in thick jungle with survivors? Was the plane diverted to another destination by terrorists? Was it taken by a UFO?
We will likely never know the answers...and it gnaws at us terribly.

The movie great because the mystery ISN'T solved. I love it just the way it is.

I just sat through an hour and a half of nothing happening. It looked nice, and Zamfir's score was awesome, but it was dull, dull, dull.

it's irritating because it presents a supposed mystery and then doesn't solve it. Like a whodunnit where you don't find out who the murderer is, This would be all right if it was a depiction of a real event (as the book for instance strongly implies) because real life mysteries are not always solved, but a fictional mystery without a solution is just annoying.

Yes, but the question isn't "why does this film irritate people?" - it's "why does this film irritate people to the point they insult people who like it?"

Look at daughterofolaf's post above (Mon Dec 9 2013 04:28:09). She inadvertently made my point - disliking or being irritated by the film isn't enough; insulting fans of the film is key.

I get the irritation. I'm trying to grasp why it results in personal invective.
