Alix of Hesse and her accent

Alix could not have an accent as terrible as that! Do we know anything more about the actress, Meriel Brook(e)
?

I just took another look, Episode 10, in Scotland, she only has a couple of lines. I'm not that great at recognizing accents, but it seems like a slight Russian accent, which would be completely inaccurate. Even if I'm wrong and they are trying to convey a slight German accent, this also would be incorrect. This is a surprising error.

Alix, from what I have read, was most comfortable using English. Although born in Germany, her mother was English (a daughter of Queen Victoria), and Alix spent much of her youth around English-speaking people. I've also read that Nicholas and Alix mostly used English when speaking to each other in their day-to-day life. So Alix would have spoken English without a foreign accent.

As to the actress, I'm always curious when an actor only has a few credits to their name and then seems to fall of the face of the Earth (nothing about them on the internet, for example).

In the "old days" ('Edward' is in the 1970s, at the tail end of the era I'm referring to) it wasn't uncommon for an actress to give up her career in favor of having and raising children.

I'm not saying that is the case here. Another scenario is an actor or actress gives up film and TV in favor of the theater.

Don't know in this case.

My thoughts exactly! I believe there is no portrait of Alix close to the truth till this day!

I've just started re-watching this. I haven't yet gotten this far in the series and don't remember what the actress's/characters accent was portrayed as -- but actually yes, while Alix spoke perfect English, she almost certain DID speak it with a foreign accent.

Of course we have no recordings of their voices. But Alice (Alix's mother) was born to a German father and half German mother. (Sources mention that Victoria spoke with a German accent.) Louis (Alix's father) was German. Alix was raised in Germany and then spent 20-odd years living in Russia. (The tendency was for Victoria's children living abroad to have English nannies and governesses for their children, but other household staff would have been local.) She and Nicky spoke English to each other because that was their best common language -- not necessarily their 'first' language.

Not to mention that her last IMDB credit is simply refered to as "Woman Bystander" on IMDB. Ouch...
