Still never seen Spartacus, Fear and Desire or Killer's Kiss.

reply

1. Dr. Strangelove (mainly because I'm a huge Terry Southern fan)
2. Eyes Wide Shut
3. The Shining
4. Barry Lyndon
5. The Killing
6. 2001
7. A Clockwork Orange
8. Full Metal Jacket
9. Lolita - Kubrick made a good movie but Nabokov's book is incredible - read that instead
I own Paths of Glory but I haven't seen it yet.

I guess my list is a little different than what's actually "the best" and "worst" out of his movies but I find that later in Kubrick's career he desperately needed some script rewrites. Amazing directing isn't everything. Anyway, there is no way a little number out of 10 can convey how I feel about any movie including and especially Kubrick's.

Top 5 (not necessarily in order):
2001
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
Dr. Strangelove

The Rest (not necessarily in order):
Eyes Wide Shut
Barry Lyndon
Paths of Glory
The Killing
Lolita

Have not seen Fear and Desire yet.
I do not consider Spartacus a Kubrick film. Stanley disowned it. I consider it a Kirk Douglas film.

Basically, Sex was his directorial Achille's Heel.
He was never confidant in it, mostly avoided it,
and what he did film was often detached, bizarre,
clumsy, or even perverse. Despite the trademark
voyueristic feel of his tracking shots and set pieces
the universe of Kubrick was largely a sterile one.

reply

He didn't avoid sex. All his films are obsessed with sex. The first film on your list opens with sex, for example.

"The libido has the task of making the destroying instinct innocuous, and it fulfils the task by diverting that instinct to a great extent outwards....The instinct is then called the destructive instinct, the instinct for mastery, or the will to power." - Freud

Maybe he avoided romance. Spartacus and to a lesser extent Lyndon are probably his only conventionally romantic films.
