Did any of them get anything out of that class? What was he even teaching them? None of them looked destined for college or trade school. Once their tiny Sweatballs club was over, they’d be sweating it out in the welfare lines.

sharedepends. Somebody can be really smart one area and need help in another. I was in a remedial class during elementary which was 'similar' to this where everybody was together regardless of disability/subject. I was in my 'regular' room for the subjects which I did not need services in.
shareI suppose keeping them in class and off the streets was a start. He also seemed to be a bit of a father figure outside class so more of a counselor/advocate than instructor - at least from what could be seen on the show. Of course, scenes featuring actual instruction would be boring.
