Why are so many stories centered on her? I always watched for Barbara and I guess I forgot how much of the early seasons revolve around the cranky annoying Julie.

I concur, I was a little kid when this show aired but I remember my mom watchin it, I saw it airs on the Antenna TV channel so I started watchin it, and it's all about annoying Julie :/

Mackenzie Phillips was famous before the show started. Valerie Bertinelli wasn't.

I agree. She had already been in movies, having significant roles. Plus she came from a famous family.

She was also an experienced actress. In the earlier seasons, Bertinelli could barely deliver her lines without either almost breaking character by laughing or else mugging, which was sometimes pretty distracting.

Plus she was the older Sister! They figured stories centering around the older sibling would be more exciting!

Julie was an obnoxious character. She was always loud and disrespectful, but I guess she got the loudness from Ann.
