Anyone else feel that Valerie carried the series in the later years? Barbara was the best character on the show along with Schneider in my opinion.

She was good, but Max ( Michael Lembeck) was the best actor in the later seasons!

In the later years, I liked just about everyone except Bonnie Franklin.

I loved the story line with the two Sons in law and the couples living in that cute little house. Even with Julie leaving and Grandma moving in! By that time Ann and Schneider didn't interest me anymore. Even Ann having her new husband Sam! He was OK but I'd rather see the eps focusing on the folks in the house ! Esp. Max!

One could tell she was losing interest as the show wound down, like she was very eager to do other things. In the early days she had such enthusiasm. She even laughed at her own jokes. By her own account she was doing drugs in the later years, hence the change in her performance level. It was like she was just cashing a check.

By contrast on Hot In Cleveland she looked like she was happy to be there the whole time. She realized how lucky she was to be back as a working actress with a talented ensemble.

i think this show got by on the fact that millions of guys my age & older were reasonably horny for valerie bertinelli.
