For me, it's impossible. The original cast, IMO, is irreplaceable...especially Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman (they were BORN to play Dr. Frankenstein and Igor, as far as I'm concerned)!

reply

No, just leave it be. Just as well, leave most all of Mel Brooks movies alone. It's because of the casts and Mel's writing and directing that make them so good.

reply

Gene Wilder's writing, too (he co-wrote the film AND was the one who came up with the idea for it!)! ;)

In fact, that whole concept started out with Gene Wilder. That was his baby. And you can tell the parts that Mel Brooks added to it, and they're somewhat over-the-top. Sort of schmaltzy comedy. He was the type of guy who, like in Blacking Saddles, would have a man humping a statue. Wilder is the type of humor that would have the doctor turning the creature into a "man about town."

I'm of the opinion that the original cast is one of - if not the - best comedy ensembles ever assembled. Peak performers at the top of their powers. That said, since this is purely hypothetical fantasy and won't perpetrate any real sacrilege against the sanctity of the original, I'm game. Here's my cast for Young Frankenstein Jr.:

Dr. Frankenstein - Bill Hader
Igor - Jon Glaser
Inga - Alison Brie
The Monster - Christopher Meloni
Elizabeth - Elizabeth Banks
Inspector Kemp - Jermaine Clement
Blindman - Albert Brooks
Frau Blucher - Kristen Schaal
with an adapted screenplay by Vernon Chatman and all directed by Gaspar Noe. Only in dreams ....

To me, if not this cast, there's only one other cast that can do it. That's the original musical Broadway cast, which I think are a tiny bit better than the movie cast:

Frederick: Roger Bart (must, has to be, no other)
Igor: Christopher Fitzgerald
Inga: Sutton Foster (better than Teri Garr)
Frau Blucher: Andrea Martin
Monster: Shuler Hensley
Elizabeth: Megan Mullalay
Inspector Kemp: Fred Applegate
Hermit: Fred Applegate

reply

No, let's not.

reply

Agree, let's leave well alone.

Hollywood NEEDS to start writing new 'classics' like this again!
STOP this horrible remake nonsense.

reply

Amen to that!! I've had more than my fill of reboots, remakes, remixes, retreads, and the wholesale lack of creativity and originality in the film and music world. Scary to think that Television is the most creative medium we have to day, and still the vast majority of it is crappy. And why would you choose a movie like this that is almost perfect in every way???

A wonderful concept....a movie that is not a re-make. Can Hollywood pull it off? Can they hire writers who can come up with an original idea? That's a stretch.

"check the imdb cast list before asking who portrayed who in movies"

reply

They dont need to hire writers to come up with new ideas. Just look to the local library, there are so many books out there that could be turned into movies.

reply

Lets not bother . It is a great movie period. Why do people waste their time talking about recasts and remakes ? . A classic film should be left alone.

^Jesus christ people, stop being so melodramatic, it's just a fun hypothetical notion. No-one is asking to change it, just having fun considering the modern equals of these great actors.

I agree Will Ferrell comes to mind as the Doctor, Anna Faris is a great comedic actress (excluding 'Mums') and Steve Buscemi is an obvious shoe-in for Feldman. John C Reilly would be really cool as the inspector I think, as for the monster, that's a little harder.

reply

Will Ferrel could replace gene Wilder...uh...NEVER!!!

Two different styles of acting. Wilder is subtle, and always 5 degrees off of normal.

Ferrel is a big kid, playing grown up.

Besides ALL of that...you simply can't remake classics and that you'd even consider it possible, makes you a Philistine!

reply

It's just a fun "what if". No one is saying that we should remake it as none of us have the power to do so either. Calm down everyone ... there are no plans for a remake. We just taking opinions of who could fill these roles in the modern day without getting our panties in a bunch!!!

reply

I don't think anybody needs to "calm down", or is getting their panties in a bunch...or is that what you hoped would happen? Why else start a thread about recasting YF? People are simply stating the obvious; it doesn't need to be rebooted, remade, recast, or whatever euphemism you choose. Some movies are fun to speculate about, in the case of YF it's just a waste of time.

This movie's comedy is so broadly done that in the hands of lesser talent it would be like watching something on the level of "Scary Movie".

Put Will Ferrel in it as the star and it becomes unwatchable.

reply

Nah, any remake would undoubtedly be done by Judd Apatow and would no doubt contain a scene of Dr. Frankenstein (Jason Segel), The Monster (Seth Rogen) and Igor (Paul Rudd) smoking pot and talking about jerking off or something.

Or worse, it'll be a Seltzerberg film where "Look, it's Kim Kardashian!" where they cut to a Kim Kardashian impersonator standing around just before a cow falls on her is the most sophisticated joke in the whole movie.
