Great, but definitlely not one of the funniest comedies of all time

It has one or two laugh out loud moments, but most of it is just chuckle worthy. It's more of a satire than a comedy.

We can become cops, or criminals. But when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?

That's what I thought the first time I saw 'Young Frankenstein'. But for my own surprise, I found it a lot funnier the second time that I saw it.
Perhaps the reason why I didn't find 'Young Frankenstein' THAT funny the 1st time around is because I went to see it with a lot of expectations since this movie is considered one of the finest comedies ever. Therefore the "hype" played against the movie itself. But the 2nd time around I knew already what to expect, so I could enjoy it for what it is.

Besides the first time I didn't caught several in-jokes and homages to the old Frankenstein movies because I had only watched 'Frankenstein' but not 'Bride of Frankenstein' nor 'Son of Frankenstein'.
The 2nd time around I found it funnier because I had already watched those movies, therefore those "cryptic" in-jokes, now makes sense completely.

I think it is a parody, not satire. And how many movies can actually generate a laugh? I mean a real laugh out loud laugh. YF has such strong gags that it gets me even when I know what's coming to this day after dozens of viewings. I'm just trying to remember them in my head and I'm up to 10 jokes/gags. I like and have watched lots of movies. Some of the funniest movies I've seen recently are The Hangover and Zombieland. They're funny, and I would recommend them, but they're not in the league of YF. And can "funniness" be quantified? It is more a collective opinion by repeat viewers for comedies, as opposed to dramas being more critic/award driven.s

Oh, I completely get the expectations being too high thing. Forrest Gump for instance, was so hailed, so glorified that by the time I finally saw it, I was completely underwhelmed. In contrast, if you go in with NO or very low expectations, sometimes you can really appreciate a flick that you may have disregarded (the Nathan Fillion movie, Slither comes to mind).

Of course our enjoyment of something can be influenced by the opinions of others. That's human nature.

I agree with the OP. I watched it again to see why everyone loved it and I wasn't impressed. I love how Gene Wilder acts so seriously all the time. He's a great actor even when the comedy is a farce.

I stand by my response 2 years ago. This is one of the funniest movies of all time. Anyone who doesn't agree has a poor sense of humor. It's not your faults. True sense of humor requires wisdom, thoughtfulness, and perspective. Most of you don't have this. I'd blame your parents.

Taste in comedy varies. For instance i thought Blazing saddles was hilarious, but this i find only mildly funny.

It is a good comedy but more than that a very enjoyable film, satire, parody, call it what you will. That's what makes it one of the best for me.

YF is funny and charming - but could have been so much funnier.
Carry On screaming -the snobs may hate it - but that is brilliant horror comedy

Young Frankenstein had its moments of great gags and subverting Horror conventions through parody, but for me Blazing Saddles did a better job as a comedy and subverting conventions in general.

I'm not sure what the big deal is either, though I definitely enjoyed the film a hundred times more this time round than I did a few years ago. The film is sort of scene by scene, with no timing between the actual scene edits. I feel like I'm watching a feature length series of sketches at some points.

I do think this film is gorgeous to look at, though. Every light has a star on it (I guess they used some filter) and Gene Wilder is absolutely glowing throughout.

I know I'm in the minority, but I find High Anxiety to be leaps and bounds funnier than Young Frankenstein. BTW, the OP never came back. Typical.

I recon this is miles ahead of Blazing Saddles and hasn't aged like BS has. This films is genuinely laugh-out-loud funny to me and Mel Brooks best film. I honestly didn't expect to laugh so much in this as I watch BS again recently and was disappointed, but YF is even more brilliant than I remember it.

You need to change the word "definitely" to "in my opinion."

Moviebuff? No, lol (facepalm)

You are very, very wrong.

I consider Young Frankenstein one of the best comedies of all time. It is clever, tells a great story that holds up on its own outside of the jokes alone and has great performances, production values and direction. Though there are quite a few movies that I have had more belly laughs from, Young Frankenstein is nearly unbeatable as a great comedy.
