Bob the Mayor fell off something - didn't quite see where he landed
shareOh man, totally.
I've been petrified of scenic elevators since seeing this as a kid.
The hopeless way in which Fred Astaire is calling her name at the end before being handed her cat just adds to the PTSD.
I saw an elevator like this recently and this exact scene came to mind.
shareThis scene really upset me as a kid. Seeing Jennifer Jones fall out of the elevator and then watch her body fall while she screams. Then she hits the building and the screams stop. This was the part of the movie that I could never get out of my mind.
shareIt was a clever move in a way, made sure nobody would ever forget it. Same with Shelley Winters' death in The Poseidon Adventure.
Irwin Allen - scarring children the world over.
Wow, yeah Shelley Winters' death in The Poseidon Adventure was also one I just didn't care for. I think that it had to do with the fact that both characters were really likable, which made their deaths more upsetting.
shareSeemed to happen a lot in those flicks - the nice older woman would die, leaving behind a traumatized husband/partner - remember it too in the crummy Poseidon sequel, that Paul Newman one with the volcano on the island, and even Daylight with Stallone.
Heartstring tugging.
I remember in the Poseidon Adventure the traumatized husband was grandpa Joe from Willie Wonka!!
shareI absolutely HATE that scene. It's the only death in the entire Irwin Allen oeuvre that felt mean-spirited and gratuitous to me.
shareNot only did she fall out of the elevator, but she screamed all the way down until hitting the side of the building. Jennifer Jones was so beautiful and had such an ugly death here. I saw this in the theaters when I was 11 and that scene stuck with me for a long time. This scene still bothers me.
