Suppressors will only work with semi or full auto guns

they will not work in a revolver because of the space between the cylinder and the barrel. The fact that they prop department got it wrong and had a suppressed revolver at the 1:35 point in the movie may be considered a big flaw but in my opinion it did not effect my enjoyment of the movie in any way.

I see that in movies a lot. Also the fact that suppressors are still called silencers (like they would put off a mild puff) is still funny.

The confusion between clip and magazine bothers me more, most of my guns are magazine fed but I own some revolvers that use clips and I own a couple M-1 Garands that use en bloc clips.

Oddly enough the guy that invented them called it a silencer, but suppressor is a more accurate term because modern devices suppress, muzzle flash, recoil, and muzzle blast. Suppressing muzzle blast is particular important to sniper in a situation where the gasses expelled from the muzzle may cause the tall grass and weeds to move thereby revealing the position of the sniper. Suppressor is now considered the proper term because modern devices do more than just reduce the sound. As the JoshuaHutchins correctly pointed out the device never silenced the gun, it suppressed the sound to the level similar to a toy cap gun being fired.

Not quite correct, silverr8c,
The Nagant revolver of Russian manufacture can be very effectively supressed, because when the trigger is pulled, the cylinder is shifted forward, engulfing the barrel's forcing cone and creating a gas proof seal. With no escaping of gas from between the barrel and cylinder, suppression is easily accomplished with a screw-on silencer (or suppressor, if you insist). The Soviet NKVD and SMERSH used suppressed Nagant revolvers for assassination purposes for decades.

You are correct, but those are fairly rare and not the type gun that was used in the movie.

Maybe now, but Not it 75, I bought 1 and 3 box's of ammo for 150$, back then, The ammo cost more than the pistol

reply

Nonsense; any small caliber firearm can be suppressed to some degree. Not enough to render it literally silent, but enough to diminish, muffle & disguise the report.
