From top of my head... Airplane!, This Is Spinal Tap, The Big Lebowski, Borat, Four Lions... Strangely or not, I´ve never found Holy Grail - or any other MP movie, for that matter - to be quite the tops in terms of the sheer laugh-out-loud ratio. The surreal, subversive idiocy of it all goes a mighty long way, however... as does the piercing historical/social/political satire.

City Lights (1931)
The Seven Year Itch (1955)
House (1977)
Return of The Living Dead (1985)
Naked Gun II: Smell of Fear (1991)
Delicatessen (1991)
Amelie (2001)

I agree with many of the other posts but I am surprised to not see any mention of this one yet:

The Jerk (1979) with Steve Martin

The funniest movies are yes, silly and intelligent, but honestly I feel The Jerk has what Holy Grail sometimes lacks and that's restraint. There is too much silliness for the sake of silliness alone in The Holy Grail, and I will admit I think the funniest thing it has to offer are Chapman's facial expressions.

One that hasn't been mentioned...The Birdcage. I love that movie!!

Raising Arizona
Young Frankenstein
Airplaine!
The Naked Gun

All funnier than Holy Grail.

None funnier.

I think "Pink Panther Strikes Again," while a completely different movie, has a very large number of funny scenes (the entire opening at the insane asylum, Clouseau v. Kato up through the Quasimodo outfit, servant interrogation, Clouseau trying to get in the castle, tooth extraction, the entire English-making-fun-of-the-French, Clouseau's arrogance to match his incompetence, etc.) that places it up there. "PPSA" is more like a Buster Keaton/Harold Lloyd silent movie with sound.

I don't think I will ever tire of the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch.

to the OP many on that list arent as funny like the Hangover, Borat, Dumb & Dumber and Idiocracy.

Someone tell me why Idiocracy is so overrated.

reply

Life of Brian only because the ending is one of my favorite cinematic scenes of all time

Sorry - everyone stop posting - look no further - the absolute best of all time:

1. Blazing Saddles
2. Holy Grail
3. Airplane
4. Caddyshack
5. Animal House
6. Fletch
7. Stripes
8. Borat

I will only choose one pic per director, as all his other works were close 2nds to their masterpiece above, so I don't want to be redundant....however I will give honorable mention to:

Coming to America
Ghostbusters
Young Frankenstein
Spaceballs
Spinal Tap
Dumb and Dumber
Roxanne
Trains, Planes & Automobiles
Blues Brothers

reply

You have Airplane! up there. It couldn't possibly be the best of all time.

The problem (for me) with Blazing Saddles and all Mel Brooks' movies is that he doesn't know when to stop. They're funny as heck for about 45 minutes, but he just keeps flogging the same horse until it dies. Holy Grail never does that; it's hilarious until the last frame.

I've seen some really funny stuff from classic Hollywood with W.C. Fields, the Marx Bros., and so on, but I've never laughed at anything like I've laughed at Holy Grail. Maybe if I'd seen Life of Brian first, I'd feel differently, but my firends and I recite lines from Holy Grail like the bible:

"Now let's not argue about who killed who . . . " (I'm laughing right now).

Brian.

Top Secret! is the only movie funnier than the holy grail.

None of these
