Who watches stuff like this?

I have watched a ton of gory, dusturbing flicks. Hostel. Salo. Ichi the Killer. Caligula and Cannibal Halocuast were almost more than I could watch though. Halocaust had me tempted to turn it off during the abortion scene, and Caligula made me pause my veiwing in several scenes. But this looked aweful I had trouble watching the entire trailer. Maybe it is because I think of the real experiments commited by the nazis (which were far worse than can be depicted in any film,no matter how extreme) But I want to know who enjous watching such things portrayed in such a crass and insensative manner?

Some people, like me, watch these kind of films out of curiosity. We have to accept that sometimes we can't resist to see something which has been labeled as 'unwatchable' or 'shocking' or 'sickening'... you just HAVE to see it. I think it has to do with our natural curiosity and morbid interest.

I do because it is fun to watch : who could say they were bored when they saw it ?

"I find this movie less offensive than Hollywood 'family' films with their enforced heterosexuality, disgusting middleclass Christianity and brain-dead suburban longings. 'Family,' to quote a character in John Water's Cecil B Demented 'is just another word for censorship.'"

Well Avant not to be rude, but let me go ahead and blow your preconception out of the water. I'm a Christian and I'm also a fan of "Ilsa" and others like it. Of course, I think there's more artistic merit in films like "Salo" or "Cannibal Holocaust". But in Ilsa's case, I can't quite put my finger on what I like about it. I certainly am not a violent person (and hate it in real life) but this is movie violence since I can reassure myself of that. It's not like they're actually torturing or killing people. Maybe I like it because I'm not afraid of being completely revolted. This movie causes an allergic reaction to my "folk" sensibilities, and I can handle that. The fact that i keep coming back to "stuff like this" perhaps makes me something of a masochist.

Any film is interesting if you detach yourself from the events it shows, and look at the perspective of the people who made it...

It may be that it is crass and insensitive... but that in itself says something about the aims of the makers, and the mindset that drove them to produce it...

If Hitler himself had ever directed a movie, I'd watch it... Doesn't mean I'd like it, but I'd watch it, merely to be informed.

People like you and me.

And why are Hostel. Salo. Ichi the Killer. Caligula and Cannibal Halocuast better than this?

I think it's just normal, human curiosity, like looking at a car crash instead of turning away. I like some of these films, and I think I'm a pretty normal person. But I draw the line at watching anything that isn't simulated. For instance after hearing about the real animal killings in "Cannibal Holocaust" I wouldn't even consider watching that movie. And I won't watch garbage either; the film can be violent but it needs to have some artistic qualities. I watched Ilsa because of my interest in WW2. I like the evil tone of the film but I didn't enjoy the torture scenes.
