Other movies and directors in a similar style?

I would love to hear other's recommendations for other films, especially older stuff from the 60s and 70s and 80s.
Thank you!

Luis Bunuel in general, especially "THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL" and "THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE".

The Wayward Cloud (2005)

The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) (Really bizarre Canadian kids flick, eh)

Chronopolis (1983)

I killed Einstein, Gentlemen (1970) available at www.superhappyfun.com
(A wackey futuristic Czech film where women are barren and grow beards due to radiation. Women, refuse to shave in protest. A scientist builds a time machine so he can kill Einstein for inventing the bomb.)

Meatball Machine (2005)

You are a Widow, Sir (1970)

Fantasy Mission Force (1982) (Really insane Jackie Chan movie which plays like Three Stooges and Fellini doing "the Dirty Dozen". Not a good film, but amusing)

The Night Evelyn Came out of the Grave (1971)

Footprints (Le, Orme) (1975)

Hardware (1990)

The only other film that I think is remotely like "The Magic Mountain", apart from Jodorowsky's own films is Matthew Barney's enormous, beautiful, tedious, ugly, amazing, pretentious "The Cremaster Cycle", which goes for hours and hours and hours, but is available in excerpt form on DVD.

Worth a look, but pack a lunch.

Great thread! Just read through all 11 pages. Here are a few more, some may not be as strange as the prevously mentioned, or have already have been mentioned, but what the hell.

Andrey Rublyov (1969)
(Banned from the soviet union)

Ichi the Killer (2001)
(I don't think it was listed yet, but if you going for wierd, then Ichi is it)

Alice in Wonderland (1951)
(I know it's a disney cartoon, but just think of the subject matter)

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1990)
(An odd film)

Youth of the Beast (1963)
(The first great & weird Seijun Suzuki yakuza flick)

Just to name a few.

The 10th Victim (1965)

Taxidermia (2006)

The Untold Story (1993) (Brutal as hell, but achieves a bizarre feeling like no other film)

reply

Good work guys. Keep it up.

I don't know how similar the following films are to The Holy Mountain but they are certainly unusual, contain surreal elements and have a 'Jodorowskyian' imagination.

Taxidermia (2006) - Gyorgy Palfi (makes John Waters look like a catholic schoolgirl in comparison)

Honey and the Pig (2004) - Olga Malea (oh, just your usual romantic comedy from Greece about Pedophilia and a heroic pig with a big appetite)

Zoo (2007) - Robinson Devor (it’s a documentary about a man that did the unthinkable with a horse)

The Goat That Ate Time (2006) - Lucinda Schreiber (a short animation from Australia and the title is self explanatory). Not listed on IMDB.

My Happy End (2007) - Milen Vitanov (another short animation about a dog that catches its tail and finds a friend there)

The White Wolf (2006) - Pierre-Luc Granjon (yet another short animation and it’s about a boy that catches a wolf to ride on). Not listed on IMDB.

La Moustache (2005) - Emmanuel Carrere (a man believes he has shaved his moustache but those close to him insist he never had one to begin with)

Gaja Gamini (2000) - M.F Hussain (this Indian director is despised because some of his paintings are sacrilegious and this is his ode to women)

Meenaxi (2004) - M.F Hussain (same director with a spin on reality)

Build a Ship, Sail to Sadness (2007) - Laurin Federlein (a musical about a petrol sniffer that travels with his bike to introduce his mobile disco idea to the world)

reply

Thanks Film Buff for recommending "Gaja Gamani". It was like Godard meets Salvadore Dali gone Bollywood musical. The brightly colored set designs are out of this world. What an amazing undiscovered gem!

Hey, NateManD and the rest of the people, check out this titles from mexican cinema (it's really weird stuff):

Surrealistic:
La Fórmula Secreta (1965)
Tequila (1992)
Redondo (1986)
Deseos (1977)from Jodorowsky's cinematographer.
Otaola o la república del exilio (2000)

Stories stylish with surrealistic ways:
Los Caifanes (1967)
Cabeza de Vaca (1991)
Mezcal (2004)
Bajo California (1998)

And WTF Worlds (not my favorites):
El Evangelio de las Maravillas (1998)

I also recommend, from other countries:
From Luis Buñuel: Belle du Jour (1967) and Simon from the desert (1965)
From Bigas Luna: Jamón Jamón (1992) and Huevos de Oro (1993) with references from Buñuel.
Check out the whole movies from Alex de la Iglesia, he's got his own cinematographic world.
Did someone mention Peter Greenaway's 8 1/2 women?
IP5:L'ile aux pachydermes (1992)

Let's keep the thread.

reply

Awesome, I've been looking for a copy of "La Fórmula Secreta" for quite some time. I've also been looking for a good quality copy of a rare film from Argentina called "Hour of the Blast Furnaces". www.superhappyfun.com has some of Rafel Corkidi's films, but the quality is not to good. Mariana, I was wondering if you knew where I could find good copies of "Deseos" and "La Formula Secreta"?

reply

That's the deal, NateManD, "La Fórmula Secreta" is a difficult movie to get, it's like a legend, and many people say that it can only been purchased by the great empire of piracy. Write to [email protected], which is the e-mail of the store of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE), in order to ask for it, let's see what they can tell you about it. The same thing can happen for "Deseos" (which I saw on TV once at a very late hour).
I'll try to check about that movie too. If you get lucky about gettin' it, please tell us, I'll do the same.

Good luck, friend.

reply

I found out that they have "La Formula Secreta" on www.superhappyfun.com It is a DVD-R bootleg. I'm not sure how the quality is? I can't wait to get it once I get extra money.

reply

Okay...Out of my respect for this thread, Jodorowsky, and all you crazy bastards, I went through and copied everything I could. I tried to just copy and paste the titles of movies, but because some people said things like "Woody Allen's Sleeper", the director names sneak into this list. I tried to delete doubles, but I'm sure this isn't perfect. This is just a reference for the next poor bastard that stumbles on to this thread. My GOD, so many wonderful movies I haven't seen!!! Thank you everyone!! Again, THIS IS NOT A PERFECT REPRESENTATION OF THIS ENTIRE THREAD. If you want details, nifty explanations (I deleted long ones that fudged up the list), then take some time and go back through the twelve pages of amazing stuff...Good luck!!!

My apologies to anyone who's entries I omitted, or lovely descriptions I deleted! Explore this thread, people! It's great!!!

Lastly, I'd just like to mention that the original poster asked for movies in "a similar style", and "older stuff from the 60s and 70s and 80s", not necessarily spot-on Jodorowsky knockoffs. This is just a list of great movies, most of which will leave Joe Lunchbox scratching his head and throwing his DVD player out the window!!!

really interesting how turning the list of your dvds into a thread holds everyone's attention for so long.

also quite interesting how nobody has explained how any of these films relate to anything other than this list.

which isn't to say i don't enjoy reading lists but is to say that it not so difficult a task to find everything is IN COMMON with your favorite director.

Well, as I remarked earlier, this list has just turned into coughing up as many unusual (cult or underground or whatev) movies as possible.

Anyways, haven't checked in lately, so I have no idea if these have been listed already, but here we go...

The movies of Frank Henenlotter (An extremely small filmography, I've only managed to track down the first two Basket Case movies and his excellent Brain Damage. Really grimy, gritty, bizarre NY-set horror stories)

Bone (by Larry Cohen. Goes by a dozen other names. Rocks, regardless)

Hundstage
Tierischer Liebe
(by Ulrich Seidl. Muy, muy disturbing)

The life and times of Judge Roy Bean (by John Huston. A *beep* masterpiece of western weirdness!)

Oh, and speaking of Ralph Bakshi:
Coonskin (AKA Streetfight... very weird, overlooked and misunderstood Blaxploitation-esque cartoon w. some real live stuff in it as well. Very memorable)

reply

Try "Anita -Tänze Des Lasters" (1987) and "Horror Vacui" both by Rosa Von Praunheim.
"The Wicker Man" (1973) by Robin Hardy also comes to mind.
Films by Ulrike Ottinger ("Freak Orlando", "Dorian Gray Im Spiegel Der Boulevardpresse", "Bildnis Einer Trinkerin. Aller jamais retour" "Usinimage", "Madame X", "Johanna D'Arc Of Mongolia")
and also "Tommy by The Who" (Ken Rusell)

reply

Barbarella (1968) Roger Vadim (I don't think this was mentioned on the list yet)

Slipstream (2007) Anthony Hopkins (Hopkins Directs a bizarre Felliniesque Lynch like flick)

The Eternal Evil of Asia (1995)

Maelström (2000) (Abortion, Hit and Run and a Talking Fish)

Big Man Japan (2007)

If you don't mind or, even better, like animation, KAWAMOTO Kihachirô's Tabi – very similar to Fantastic Planet in visual style, but closer to The Holy Mountain in its intensity – and all three were released in the same year. Available on the DVD "The Exquisite Short Films of Kihachiro Kawamoto" but I'd recommended the Japanese DVD more (if you can play region 2) as the USA one misses out my other favourite of his, the fairy tale Ibara-Hime matawa Nemuri-Hime.

Has anyone Heard of the Film Sonny Boy (1989)

I've been tracking down a DVD release but yet to find one.

Few great & weird films I haven't seen mentioned before:

1. My Winnipeg (2007) - newest film by Guy Maddin
2. Ex Drummer (2007) - one of the most *beep* up movies made this century - a must see
3. Avida (2006) - reminded me of Fando & Lis and it's starring Fernando Arrabal!
4. Nuit Noire (2005) - well actually I didn't understand a thing from this film (but I know some of you will take it as a compliment for this film :D), it felt like something between Lynch and Kafka.
5. Cat Soup (2001) - it's like Un chien andalou of the XXI century, absolutely great.
6. Price of Milk (2000)
7. Genesis (1998)
8. Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds (1989)
9. Gorod Zero (1988) - rare Russian surreal film
10. Angel Mine (1978)- funny surreal/camp film from New Zealand
11. Anna and the Wolves (1973) - great film from Carlos Saura, reminds me of Bunuel films
12. Cicatrice intérieure (1972)
13. Éden et après (1970)
14. Horrors of Malformed Men (1969) - little slow at the beginning, but scenes on the island are nearly as weird as Holy Mountain.

Just wanted to applaud all of your lists man. I know this thread is over 3 years old, but praise is better late than never. I thought I saw more movies than any human being I know, and out of all the lists you posted [and there were quite a few! :)] I only saw a few, like Lynch's work, Kubricks work, Simon of the Desert, among a couple of others. You have taught me a true lesson in film history! So thank you. Although, I can't help but admit that most of those movies are art projects, and pieces of work in which the filmmakers attempted to push the envelope as far as humanly possible, and in doing so forgot that there's such a thing as story, character and plot. Although, perhaps, they never intended to tell a story in the first place and just wanted to gross people out. Either way...

EDIT: I noticed in another post, you mentioned Funeral Parade of Roses, a film I have been dying to see for a long time. But it is not available on DVD or VHS, so I'm curious, where did you see it? In some kind of theater? or...?

reply

"Funeral Parade of Roses" is available on a region 0 dvd at amazon uk and at diabolikdvd. Heres a link.
http://www.diabolikdvd.com/search/search.html?_srch=funeral%20parade

Link says their dvd is Region 2 and its out of stock too. :(

Dvd on amazon.uk is also R2.

reply

You can get Funeral Parade of Roses and all manner of other weird and wonderful films (quite a few on the lists here) on the UK Eureka Masters of Cinema label:

http://eurekavideo.co.uk/moc-series/

Well worth hunting down some of these.

I'm not sure, but would imagine they're Region 2 PAL.

reply

Sorry about that, I thought it was all region like Eureka's "Fantastic Planet" release. Oops.

Here's more films not mentioned yet.

Vase de Noces (1974) (aka. Wedding Trough) (Notorious for simulated pig boinking, but actually has more in common with "Begotten", "Eraserhead" and "Fando y Lis")

Highway to Hell (1991) (Surprisingly bizarre and funny; this needs a DVD release like now!)

Celebration in the Botanical Garden (1969) (One of the most underrated and beautiful films of the Czech new wave. It's like heaven caught on celluloid. A must see for fans of Vera Chytilova's "Daisies")

Seconds (1966) John Frankenheimer (This film is creepy and seemed to have an influence on Jacob's Ladder and Pi) (Very underrated and Rock Hudson gives a great performance.)
