Other movies and directors in a similar style?
I would love to hear other's recommendations for other films, especially older stuff from the 60s and 70s and 80s.
Thank you!

Has anybody mentioned Singapore Sling yet?
shareYes, That film rules! One of the wierdest film noirs I've ever seen!
shareHow about Baraka(1992) or Yume(1990)? I have heard interesting things about them.
Let me ask you a question, what is so similar about movies like Salo, Battle Royale or Requiem for a Dream compared to The Holy Mountain?
Sorry. After a while, I started running out of titles that were the most similar. So those titles are runners up to the earliest recomendations. I think Jodorowsky's influence can be seen in some of these more contemparary flicks. Also, besides "Salo" Pasolini's other films have many similarities to Jodorowsky.

Hey it's cool that you've mentionned Léolo Toxiepunk because i'm from Québec and it's always nice to see our not so famous film in the list of a foreign guy! (You're not from Québec are you?)
You're right from your side, I'm right from mine.
I'm not from Quebec, but I have wished I was Canadian many times. Free health care and a government that funds David Cronenberg films; that rules! I live in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania. I collect lots of rare films because the video rentals in our area have nothing. If I want to find good films to rent, I have to drive a half hour. I accidentaly discovered "Leolo" on vhs. I instantly fell in love with the film. The intro had a similar feel to Jodorowsky with the Buddha like chants. Leolo's character reminded me of myself as a child. It has to be one of the most sad and haunting films I've ever seen.
shareI didn't even see it!! i've heard a lot about it and i'll go rent it right now! i'm "new" to films. I started to seriously watch movies last winter and i'm 16 years old. Because they are to much flix to watch, i didn't really had the time to watch Québecois movies. I think that this one is a good one to start ! And finally, is your copy of The Silver Globe subtitled? if so where did you found it?
i just saw that. i don't where you live in pensylvania but here's a screnning of a really weird film !!! you got to see that on big screen!

Right now www.superhappyfun.com is working on a subtitled copy of "The Silver Globe". I have a good copy I got with German subtitles from www.pimpadelicwonderland.com ; so I had to guess what was going on. I live about 2 hours from Philly, I'll have to look into that film. Thanks!

Hey, boys ! Don't you think to have exaggerated a little ?
How can you start talking about Holy mountain and continue enumerating tons of lists of the films you have seen !
I think you have losen the initial track, but, nonetheless, it has been interesting reading your favourite filmography.
In my opinion the only surrealistic film resembling to Holy mountain is Tommy (1975) by Ken Russell, even if i saw it only once, at 18 years !!! (good times gone !)
Returning to Holy mountain, we can't avoid to say that a lot of scenes do not have probably any meaning, having only the characteristic of being very odd and astonishing (what is the meaning of the animals here and there ? frogs, camels, and so on ? I don't think they have one).
By another point of view, think of the earthquake such a film would do today if it would aim to Muslims instead of Christians ... !!!
Speaking of cinematography more in general, what can you say about films like What? by Roman Polanski ? I've seen yesterday for the second time and i re-think it's simply wonderful !
Thanks for recommending "Che?"! I love Polanski; so I'll have to see it!
sharebeing a devoted Norwegian patriot I just have to point out that the book Sophie's World mentioned in this thread is in fact Norwegian, not Danish. This a great thread BTW
shareMaybe this has been mentioned already, but
Theorema by Pasolini
Not as obviously mystical and mythical as Holy Mountain, but I see a lot of similarities in structure and themes, stories of initiation, calls to authentic existence, etc.
Also, I have to say that I'm struck by how both Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Life of Brian have remarkably similar twists at the ending (especially the Holy Grail).
Heres a shortlist cocktail
Tarkovsky’s Mirror (around the same time as Holy Mountain, more dramatic/human)
Emperor Tomato Ketchup (uncut version)
Woody Allens Stardust Memories (ode to Fallinis' 8 1/2 but better)
Crispin Glovers What is it? (Looks like it may be the next Holy Mountain {sic})
Pig (Nico B. Is going to collaborate with Alejandro Jodorowsky?)

Very surprised no one has brought up Jack Smith... Not all of his stuff but most certainly "Normal Love", which is perhaps one of the most beautiful films ever made.
Also what about Richard Kern's super 8 movies
or if you have ever had the rare pleaure Tessa Hughes Freeland, or Kembra Pfahler's super 8 movies from the 80's.
Try if you can to find documentation of painter Joe Coleman's performances they are also really incredible.
