Where does it take place?

Just saw this for the time today, and I think it is a very interesting movie.

I was wondering though where the movie (except for the Vegas part) takes place. It appears to be New York, or some other large city in the East, yet when The Gambler told his girlfriend while they were in his car that they were going to Vegas, they seemed to appear there instantly, stayed one night and were then back home.

Naturally, one could fly there from the East and get there (fairly) quickly, but if there was a scene of them being is an airport, or airplane, I missed it. I realize that an audience doesn't need to be spoon fed information, but it did seem a bit jarring. Also, since he told Billie while they were in car they were going to Vegas, the implication seemed to be that they were indeed, going to drive there, so perhaps they were in a large city in the West, San Francisco being the first one to come to mind, but it doesn't have a west coast feel at all in my opinion.

So if someone out there could help answer my question, I'd really appreciate it, because I'm curious.
