I know, right?!! I saw the new Dark Shadows trailer about a week ago and was totally disgusted by what I saw. The shame of it all is that there are some really good actors perfectly cast in the different parts. All wasted on a spoof--- a total farce.

Why is it every TV show-to-movie has to be a farce these days? Hollywood is doing what MAD magazine used to do with the subject matter just nowhere near as good. They just have to give it The Brady Bunch movie treatment, which in all honesty only ever really worked for that movie. How'd that work out for Land of the Lost or Bewitched?

The sad part is that you've got a whole generation or so that'll think the original Dark Shadows was a sitcom. Granted I find it pretty unwatchable today but once upon a time it used to scare me.

The backlash from fans has sort of surprised them. Maybe Hollywood will learn from Burton's mistakes and we'll get a good Night Stalker out of this. Hey, I can dream, right? At least there's still House of Dark Shadows.

I agree, ShadowEnigma. I was so looking forward to Dark Shadows when I first read they were making it, but when I saw the trailer I was disgusted.

I am tired of shows of my youth being remade, but not like they were, but as comedies for the younger generation to laugh at. Bad enough my kids do not see my fascination with watching my fave old shows on Netflix.

So I will not build up any anticipation with a remake of this show. I loved watching it as a kid, on reruns and now on Netflix. So for them to ruin this will really upset me. And might make me swear of seeing movies that Depp gets involved with.

Please....may Tim Burton stay away from this and not make a travesty of this like he did with "Dark Shadows."

reply

Agreed, and Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the wretched screenplay for that steaming pile of fly bait, should not be permitted to come within one thousand miles of this either.

If you saw Relic, you know who I'd like to see as Kolchak, Tom Sizemore.

William Macy wouldn't make a bad Carl either.

An object at rest, cannot be stopped!

Macy has been at the top of my list for the role for some time now.

How about Gary Oldman or Robert Downey Jr.? i believe they would nail the character.

Update: Following the disastrous Lone Ranger and the colossal flops of John Carter and Dark Shadows, Disney has shelved a remake of The Night Stalker. Johnny Depp, like Will Smith, seems to be losing his star power lately, from being seen too much.

Also contributing to the shelving may be the dearth of vampire media already out, such as True Blood, Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Vampire Academy and the Twilight saga. Plus, big-budget versions of TV fare has been mostly miss over the past decade or so.

Thanks for the update.

Quite honestly, I didn't think that The Lone Ranger was that bad, but if the expectation was that it was going to be another Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney was sorely mistaken. And, as you indicate, updates of TV shows seem to have run their course--particularly for one such as The Lone Ranger that stopped production when the target audience's grandparents were kids.

By the way, "dearth" means a lack or a scarcity, and you seem to be indicating that there is already a surfeit, or excess, of vampire media. To which I agree. Of course, Kolchak fans know that there are many more beasties than vampires, but we do seem to have been inundated with beasties of various stripes over the past several years.

I'm glad that Disney is taking a pass on K:TNS. I'd hate to see it made into a commercial blockbuster kind of film. This really should be a smaller-scale film, still with quality writing and a sufficient effects budget to surpass what we saw in the show, but this isn't a DC or Marvel Comics superhero story by any measure.

Thank God!

As Gabriel Heatter used to say, “Ahh, there’s good news tonight!”

Oh, GOD no. He'll screw it up as bad as he did Dark Shadows.

Bryan Cranston or maybe Gary Cole would be my pick.

reply

Good choices. B. Cranston in his comedic roles does kind of remind me Kolchak with the facial expressions.

reply

Before they messed it up, I always thought Grimm came close to the Night Stalker vibe.
