Make that Disney and Johnny Depp. If you haven't heard, here's an article about it.

What do you think about Depp possibly playing the role? As long as they stay as far away from the terrible series that came out a few years ago.

reply

I could see Tommy Lee Jones as Kolchak; I think they look very similar. John Cusack would be interesting.

reply

Disney's an um... 'interesting' choice, but I trust Depp to do things right.

I say go for it.

Interesting.

I think Cranston is great, but would he be able to pull off the 'lighter side' of Kolchak? That, to me, is one of the main things that made the character (and Darren McGavin's performance) so memorable.

That is an inspired casting choice and I fully endorse it. Excellent idea!

He asked us, "Be you angels?"
and we said, "NAY, we are but men," ROCK!

reply

I hereby nominate David Duchovny.

I think that Johnny Depp as Carl Kolchak would be terrific. He has a lot of range as a actor, and he could be quarky enough to make an awesome Carl Kolchak.

I could see Bryan in the role. He'd be more like Darrin McGavin.

Depp style of quarky acting is campy.

I love Depp, but not as Carl Kolchak. I'll go with Cranston, with my second choice being John Cusack.

Agreed i own the series on dvd plus the two pilots The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler on vhs why they weren,t released with the dvd set is strange.
anyway the job Cusack did on The Raven AND ROOM 1300 i think he would be tailor,
made for the role.as long as Disney doesn,t dumb it down n make it lame i think,
it,s great i would love to see one of my old favorites on the big screen.

Thanks, Robertwcole.
I probably would have never thought of Cusack if I hadn't seen the film "1408". Don't know if you saw it, but Cusack plays a cynical, skeptical writer, and when I saw him I thought, "That guy could play Carl Kolchak."

How about Robert Downey Jr.? He has a reputation for playing freakish lead parts.

Johnny Depp's "Kolchak, the Night Stalker" Will Be Made by...Disney?

Kolchak, the Night Stalker, the short-lived 1974-5 television show that has been credited as the inspiration for The X-Files, is about to get a third life (the one after its even shorter-lived second life as a 2005 TV series). Johnny Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, will be bringing the adventures of reporter Carl Kolchak to the big screen.

Depp has tapped Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) as the director, although currently there is no writer attached. But surprisingly, considering the subject matter—in one episode a stripper struts her stuff before geting offed—Disney will be producing.

Deadline writes, “The subject matter will be tailored to fit Disney’s family film mandate and likely a PG-13 rating.”

That might be a misstep. Those who saw Kolchak, either during the 70s or re-runs on cable, remember the show solved mysteries that included succubi, murderous Hindu spirits, and eek, eaters of bone marrow.

While Depp could do a bang-up job playing the whistling, porkpie-hat wearing, problem-solver, Kolchak without intense creepiness would be like a de-fanged vampire: not nearly as effective.
