Atheist made this movie
It seems like atheist made this movie against religious superstition and myth, neither christianity nor paganism was promoted.

shareIsn't this movie mocking the establishment and its hysteria over the counter culture? I haven't seen this movie in ages but that's my take on it. It's the movie making fun of how uptight, super moral types like Howie viewed the newer generation, which was sexually liberated and tended to be less devout.
shareThe movie does make a stooge of Howie. It does seem to champion the superstitions of close community groups.
shareThat's why the film is great. Characters are not black or white. The cop was trying to find justice for the girl but he was acting like a crusader towards these people's beliefs.
sharePeople may just be more sensitive to when they feel attacked. Based on your reading of this, I'd guess that you're a Christian yourself, hence you single out a few words by Lord Summerisle and weight them very heavily compared to the entire rest of the movie. Then again, I attributed Howie's stifled demeanor more to his Englishness than his Christian-ness.
