If I hate Barbara Streisand will I like this movie?

I'm a huge movie lover, and I can appreciate a good movie when I see it, even if I'm not particularly fond of the cast...however I strongly dislike Miss Streisand and considering she's a large part of the film do you think it'll ruin it for me? Or is it still worth watching?

And if anyone is wondering why I don't like her, I can't explain it haha she just bothers me. I do respect her accomplishments I just don't particularly enjoy watching her on the big screen.

No one can answer that for you. If you don't like Barbara, for reasons in which you cannot even explain, then perhaps you should give her a chance in this film. Certainly coming to this forum before seeing it will sway your opinion, as it seems many people do not care for Mrs. Streisand's role as Katie, but I for one love her in the film and anything else I have seen her in.

But strangers who have no idea what your preference or attitude is in life cannot possibly say "Yes you will like this" or "No you will not".

Just think for yourself, give it a chance. And if you don't like it, you will have chosen so for yourself, if you are one of the people who fall head over heels with this movie, then you will probably watch it many times in your life.
Because if you love this movie, you can't just watch it once.

Just My Opinion.

I'd say that if you don't like Streisand, then don't bother watching this. As it seems to in every part she's played (and I like this movie), she comes across as Streisand playing Streisand, so if you don't like the real one, you won't like the "Katie" one either.

I have to agree. You've said it all in a nutshell.

I also hate her, and I started hating her BECAUSE of this movie (barabara bothers me too). guess that answers your question :P

People, especially in the internet age, seem unable to understand the meaning and the weight of words such as Hate or Love. What's trivial and what's important in life, if you always hate and love?

The room's a wreck, but her napkin is folded.

Let your mother decide for you, ana, as she so often does.

I'm a huge movie lover too....
I enjoy listening to the music of Barbara Streisand.
I do not particularly like to watch her in films. This may just be me, but she always seems to be aware of that camera. This irritates me.
She can sing her heart out for an audience but my biggest problem in trying to like her in films is that she seems to know that the audience is out there.

I still liked this movie. It was a great story. I still like Barbara Streisand. I just don't like her in this film. Watch her where she calls Hubble and begs him to be her friend. That isn't a phone conversation. It sounds like a desperate woman leaving a message on the machine...... Since this part takes place in the 40's, she isn't leaving a message on a machine.
She's playing to an audience. She's a great singer. An actress? No. I can't buy any character she tries to sell.

Am I a troll?
NO!

Fasten your seatbelts.... It's going to be a bumpy night!

I don't think you are a troll or an idiot for asking this question.

I am not a big fan of Barbra Streisand as an actress. I like this film and also Funny Girl but I haven't liked anything else. So I would say you CAN like this movie even if you aren't her biggest fan. The romance and the conflicts ring true.

Oh yeah, that phone conversation where she begs Hubble to be her friend? I don't really mind her delivery. I think she is sufficiently sad and desperate but this is what I can't stand: she excuses herself so she can blow her nose. She really needs to blow it because she has been crying. But then she is too much of a diva to actually blow it. She is so "lady-like" she just sniffs and wipes it in a very unconvincing way. Then she continues to sniff and snuffle while she talks to Hubble because she couldn't bring herself to blow her nose on camera. This irritates me almost as much as her being a waitress with those fingernails.

I'm a freak. I know it.

Unfortunately NO. Streisand is at her most irritating in this, the whole "pot roast" speech, among others. Stick to movies like FUNNY GIRL, ON A CLEAR DAY, HELLO DOLLY and YENTL if you want to see Streisand at her glorious best. The Way We Were is a depressing movie.

reply

Amazingly enough, I saw this movie for the first time last night on TCM (and I'm right in the target age group for when this first came out--I was just about the only one I knew who'd never seen it). I really liked it, but I think if you don't like Barbra Streisand, you won't like the character she plays and probably won't like the movie. I would agree with cliffcarson that if you wanted to change your mind about Streisand (which wasn't your question, I know), try Yentle. I agree with whoever mentioned the crazy long fingernails--found them distracting!

If you do finally see it, you should post what you thought.

If you don't like Striesand, the only way you'll like this movie is if you're a devoted fan of Communism. That's what her character is in the movie; a Communist.

Anytime you want to come back and join us in the present, jones, we're here waiting for you.

What a moronic and right winged comment! She started out as an ideologized student who matured and appreciated American politics and supported FDR and the War effort. You obviously didn't watch the movie or understand it through your "teabagger" glasses...

reply

You are a moron. Why should anyone like a communist character? Have you studied communism under Stalin, whom the Streisand character admired? He killed millions of his own people. And its teaPARTY, not teabagger. There, I have educated you.

reply

@valerie

There's way more to communism than Stalin---FYI, communism was invented long before Stalin was even born----it's not all about him and the atocities he committed---it never to begin with. Communism as an ideology has been exploited by dictators time and time again, as history shows. And it sure as hell doesn't mean that every person who was a Communist approved of what he did. That's like assuming that every German person under Hitler believed in Nazism (which we all know for a fact wasn't true.) Do some more research into Communism, please.

reply

So, jones7418, does that mean that in order to enjoy a movie about Germany in the '30s, you'd have to be a devoted Nazi?

reply

This is late and I'm guessing you've already made your decision. That having been said, I have never been a big Streisand fan, but Barbara Streisand did something extraordinary with this character, in my opinion. Something about the way she plays the character blows me out of the water, even watching it right now for the millionth time.

So, yes, if you haven't already, you should definitely give it a chance.
