Am I the only person on Earth who doesn't like this film?

...not only didn't like it, actually fell asleep! I was 13 that summer, and was a junior counselor for nine-year-old girls at a day camp. All my campers raved about this flick. Went to see it with a friend and honestly couldn't keep up with the plot. Seemed to me to be one long poker game (about as exciting as watching someone get their braces tightened) punctuated by I don't know what, 'cause I fell asleep. For real.

When you think of garbage, think of Hakim!

As they use to say, Different strokes for different folks!
I can't imagine that a tired 13 year old could possibly keep up with all of the plots and meandering subplots in this film. There are adults who still can't stay awake while watching it. If they can, they can't sit still long enough to follow what is going on.
No matter..... we all have our faves and not so faves.
In answer to the question, You are not the only person on earth who doesn't like this film.
Me? I LOVE IT!

reply

I love it too. One of my all time favourites.

Actually, in this day and age with the short attention spans, I'd say that we are in the minority! LOL!

I recently lent it to a coworker who had never seen it and they couldn't get into it. I have to agree with you on short attention spans.

It took me a while, but I polled the entire planet.

There is a guy in Jakarta and a woman in The Sudan who also didn't like The Sting, so no, you're not alone.

Glad there is someone else! I saw it about four times trying to comprehend the plot and fathom what could be the possible reason for its great appeal and all I got was frustrated. The fifth time I had a college roommate who claimed the film was her favorite (I wasn't in college when the film came out; it came around to the campus theater) go with me and walk me through every point I didn't understand. After this I forgot half of what I'd been told and still didn't like it. I can't understand how anyone follows the plot, let alone a group of nine-year-olds who probably just thought Redford was cute.

No, you are not the only one. I saw it during its original theatrical release, when I was nineteen years old. I recognized that it was a quality film, yet I was underwhelmed. I saw it as two un-serious actors playing at their ultra-attractive badboy popular personas, and I found the Joplin-based score anachronistic and irritating. Unfortunately, the movie had been hyped to the max, so I went to see it with overinflated expectations and was let down. I learned a lesson from that. Now that I'm old and all of that 1973 mega-hype has died down, I'd be willing to see it again to find out if it impresses me more than it did half a century ago.
