To anyone who's seen this in theaters...

How did they react the twist ending? I was alone and I almost started clapping.

I saw it in the drive in with my parents when I was 7.

I definitely remember that year that a person was either someone who had seen it and could be talked to OR you were someone who had not seen it yet and no one would say anything to you other than - 'go see it'.
It was first experience with a national spoiler alert.

That's amazing! I really wish I could've seen the premier.

Too young to remember, AND, my brother and I arrived early, and sat through the last half hour of the previous show (back when they let you do that), right as Salino gets it in the face. We didn't care, but I was disappointed that Newman didn't light a cigar with a $100 bill like in the poster. I was angry for a week, swore it was false advertising.

You have asked about one of my happiest movie moments.

I saw in the theater when it first came out (I was 13.)

I vividly remember the audience going nuts when they flipped Redford over and then smiled through the blood.

At that moment, a lot of people yelled out things like "omg, it was a set-up!!!' (including my mother who then burst out laughing.)

You never saw so many people so happy to have been "conned."

The icing on the cake? We had just seen "Blazing Saddles" (it was't a part of the double feature, American Graffiti was) but B.S. was playing next door

(Stamford, Connecticut, Summer 1974)

Thanks for asking, I love re-living this moment.

Now THAT is what I wanted to hear! What a blast it must've been! Out of every classic, I would've loved to hear the crowd's reaction to this one.

Thanks bub.

I too saw it in the theater as for the first time I seen the movie. I saw it with my parents and everyone in the audience loved the ending. I saw it when I was 10 or 11 loved it then and 40 odd years later I still love the movie and still watch it when I need a good pick me up movie

Very welcome, thank you for asking.

Saw it in the theater (at least 3 times) in 1973 and I distinctly remember the theater breaking into applause when Redford opened his eyes at the end. A definite crowd pleaser!!

reply

I would've seen it that many times as well. What a great movie it would be to admire on the big screen.

reply

Been to many movies in my life. At many the audience applauds at the end.
I saw The Sting twice at the theater. Applause was instantaneous and thunderous at both viewings so much so it was hard to hear the remaining dialogue, at least the first 20 seconds or so afterwards. Never heard anything like it. Everyone, me included, was certain Redford had sold them out. In fact, I saw the movie the second time just to hear the audience reaction, which I KNEW would happen.

reply

I didn't expect to many people to respond with the same thing! A lot of applauding going on. Like I said, I clapped when I saw it alone so I'm glad to hear many people did the same.

I saw this in a theater in Kansas City and remember the theater was packed. It seemed like at the end the audience was just in a good mood because of the ending.

reply

I saw it on opening day in Sydney in 1974. It was the first time I was in an audience which burst into applause at the end of the movie [and it was packed].

Wow, that sounds so awesome. I'm so jealous of you!! Would've loved to see this with a huge audience.

reply

Large audiences always love the whole movie.

Looking through this thread, it certainly seems that's true.
