70's New York Authenticity

The authenticity of this movie is also a character and a big part of the story. The streets, the apartments, the police station, the parks, etc., are all shot in real locations; not in cleaned up, enlarged sets. Maybe it was budgetary, or just better filmmaking, but 70's movies set in New York like this or The French Connection, are far more believable - and enjoyable - than movies made in later decades.

Speaking of cleaned up sets: was New York City ever that grungy and grimy? I agree about 70's films having an appeal that isn't found before or after.

I left in 1975. New York was disgusting. But I kept returning every few years to visit. In 1988 I was invited to an xmas party. It was one house standing in the middle of rubble. All the other houses were torn down & bricks / debris covered the ground. you had to see it to believe it.

I envy your experiences .

From what I've read, NYC was that bad in the 1970s. The population of NYC dropped significantly during that time; it didn't recover fully until the late 1990s I think
