Does anyone else think Ryan ONeal gave the best performance in the movie. I think Tatum ONeal was fantastic and deserved the Oscar, but Ryan was thereby overshadowed, and not even nominated. I thought he was amazing in Paper Moon.

But seriously, it doesn't matter how "tough" the competition was that year (fantastic year for films, by the way), his performance in this film was definitely worthy of a nomination.

I think it's partly one of those Hollywood things whereby O'Neal's big ego has sort of got him "blacklisted" in a way--the same way that Mickey Rooney's ego limited his recognition with awards. After O'Neal's nomination for Love Story he bragged in a TV interview that his winning would be almost a foregone conclusion. But he lost, and I think Hollywood has been punishing him for being so unhumble.
