Music in Mean Streets -- love it or hate it?

I imagine when Mean Streets was in theatres it was a killer soundtrack, but for me now in 2010, it sounds corny, cliched, stale, and filled with the most overplayed songs ever.

I do realize maybe part of the reason these songs became film cliches is Martin Scorsese used them in films like Mean Streets!

But what about you...love it or hate it?

reply

Hate it. Annoying and overdone. Had me shouting shut up at it a few times. There is a time for conspicuous music and a time to tone it down.

the SOundtrack is the only good thing about the movie and Charlie's acts of kindness.

I really liked it. And I saw this movie AFTER a lot of his later movies, which I don't feel had excellent soundtracks.

reply

I liked the music.

The music is the life of the party here. Keeps segues & scenes flowin' & goin' when there isn't much dialogue.

This movie is filled with oxygen, it's my fav Scorsese.

Scorsese does rely on music to carry a lot of his gangster movies, especially. I think everything works well here, because it takes on an "American Graffiti" quality, with near-continuous music going on in the background.

But, music can be a crutch. It works great here, but in other movies, it can make a director seem to be too reliant on it.

Love it!

Amazing music in this film!
