Wait, there are actually people bothered by hot chick nudity in a movie, just because there's no direct need for it in the plot?

Do we need an excuse for nudity? Can't nudity just be present? It wasn't blatant or offensive in the long goodbye, the women who were nude were comfortable being nude, it fit with their lifestyle.

I think the naked/half-naked female neighbors scenes were way over the top, but I see what Altman was getting at. Marlowe seemed more emotionally involved with his beloved cat than the naked women next door, the gangsters, or anything else featured in the film. Talk about a male who loves a cat (love the cat food scene at start of film!). Overall the hits WAY outweigh the misses in The Long Goodbye (imo). :)

What I don't understand is why they were ALL naked. It was just unnecessary.

I kinda find it funny when the Italian mobster guy is kind of astonished to see those like that, seeing as this is what Marlowe usually sees when he looks out the window.

But Marlowe doesn't mind it all. haha

They were the only things worth watching. The rest is utterly ridiculous, a pointless deconstruction of the noir genre by a talentless smart-ass with nothing to say.

All that the nude women next door meant to me is that it shows the tapestry of the Hollywood Hills at the time. This is after the Love Generation and the subsequent darkness of the Manson Killings so there's gonna be a mix of transcendental spiritualism, hedonism, and good old neighborly relations on display.
