contains most disturbing film scene in my memory

where the woman gets suckerpunched - why does this stand out for me, above all the other frightening memories, as so atrocious and unforgettable? its out of nowhere quality....and you don't expect it from Altman somehow.

I just saw the film for the first time. All I knew about it was that it's a cult flick from the early 70s directed by Altman and starring Gould. I didn't find that particular scene shocking because I anticipated it, which is strange since my wife's usually the one with the gift of predicting things in movies. The way the gangster leader was being overly nice by welcoming his lady into the apartment and having her sit down, I just sensed that he was going to suddenly smack her in the face.

That kind of set-up has been done a gazillion times in flicks in the 50 years since "The Long Goodbye" was released, which might explain how I anticipated it. I'm sure at the time it was fresh and shocking.
