Jesus is not ressurected.

How could they make a film about Jesus that ends with his death.
This must be the worst film about Jesus ever were he is not ressurected.

The movie never accepted nor denied Jesus divinity. Simple as that. It stays neutral (although in my opinion, the director portrayed Jesus in a very much mortal manner, which I admire). If it showed his resurrection in the end, it would ruin this 'neutral' basis.

I also wondered why his ressurection is not addressed in this musical, yet it is in the more fluffy GODSPELL...the final "Long Live God/Prepare Ye" number is supposed to represent the resurrection, yet Weber and Rice chose to end their version of the story at the cross.

reply

I hear at the time what Webber and Rice intended that this be told from an agnostic viewpoint

reply

My understanding was there is no resurrection because Andrew Lloyd Webber was not a believer.

On the Special Edition DVD that was released a few years ago, Tim Rice is interviewed. He said that they chose to remain neutral on whether Jesus was a mortal or the Son of God. They left that viewpoint up to the viewer.

I was a little let down the first time on the fact he didn't resurrect. But like others have said, it leaves it neutral on purpose I think, more just 'showing' the human side of what happened at the time. Secretly we Christians know what really ends up happening ;) but that's not what the movie was about.

Now I kinda like that it ends that way. Because it's a fairly sad/depressing ending, which brings emphasis to the sacrifice he made, I think. It was sad and did suck I'm sure at the time, to his followers and all that. So...I don't know, Jesus dying is a sad, suffering thing. Even though it was all a sacrifice and for a larger good...hard to explain. But it's like, c'mon, the sacrifice itself deserves some attention too. I've read some atheists on this board saying they felt more compassion for Jesus in this movie than what they've heard from religions, etc...so in some way, that's good. Because you should feel sad for what he did and endured for the sake of following God and helping us in the end. ;P

Haha! Christians are sheeple. :-P

Rice and Webber were agnostics. The play/soundtrack actually ends with a anstrumental number called John 19:41, that speaks of the nearby tomb in the garden. So the film ended pretty much like the origial. In the landscape scene at the end of the movie I THINK I see someone walking across the sunset. Could it be Jesus?

Also, traditional Passion Plays do not include the Resurrection.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passion_play

A Passion play is a dramatic presentation depicting the Passion of Jesus Christ: his trial, suffering and death.
