Why does it look SO UGLY??
The film I mean.
shareExplain what you mean by “ugly”. I’ve seen this film many times and have never come close to considering its look to be ugly. Quite the opposite, actually.
shareDonald Sutherland was hardly a feast for the eyes when he was young, so I can't complain on that account.
But I can see how an unsophisticated person might think this film is "ugly", someone who doesn't know how old some European cities are or what kind of shape they can be in away from the tourist areas. I've been to Venice, and yes the tourist areas are well maintained, but away from the catedrales and piazzas you see crumbling brickwork and decaying stucco, flood stains and overshadowed streets that never see the sun (or at least when I visited years ago). Personally I think the use of Venice in its old age gives the film a unique and haunting atmosphere perfect for a ghost story, but apparently not everyone gets it.
Oh, I didn’t realize that he meant the actual look of the world. I thought he was referring to film stock and lighting and whatnot.
shareI don't know that he did, I'm making assumptions. Because I love the haunting, atmospheric look of this film, and took advantage of the chance to talk about it.
shareUgly how?
Did you watch a jacked up print of it?
Seemed pretty normal looking for an older movie thh...
Good creepy movie btw
Because it’s a 70’s film. Grainy, full of natural light, handheld camera, actors without fake tans and loads of make-up and plastic surgery.
It’s also Venice in Winter, often at night. It’s supposed to be creepy and haunting.
The French Connection has that similar 70’s ‘ugliness’.
